The Stones would have never put such a trash on a disc!

The Stairway tribute by Heart and Jason Bonham was awesome. The reaction from Robert Plant and the rest of the band was moving. One of the great moments of rock in 2012. But still not the greatest rock band. We know who that is.

Yeah, the Stones would never do a tongue-in-cheek psuedo-country song.

Hold on...Led Zep had made more of a lasting impact in the few years they were together than any other band except maybe the Stones and the Beatles.

I can't see another 3 piece format with as much magic as those guys had. Just incredible. Although I heard it later, that first record released in the 60's set the standard for hard rock up several notches.

Zep will remain a huge force in what is left of Rock music, they influenced me deeply and continue to influence the kids who are playing rock these days. My hat is off to those fellows and the joy they have given me. No sense trying to cut them down or compare them to other acts, they were their own thing.

If you doubt their popularity or influence just check out the number of YouTube hits they have, more than the Stones or the Beatles. peace

Was just watching "The Muppets" the other day, and everybody's favorite Zeppelin fan was in the movie. I couldn't help but think of this thread. Jack Black is tied up on stage with the Muppets and their little barber shop quartet did a version of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and Jack said they were ruining "one of the greatest songs of all time", and I figured people here would have something to say about that too.

I can't help but think that line was added on account of Dave Grohl making a cameo in a Muppet rip-off band in Reno, in which he played drums dressed like Animal.

Fun movie though. Took me back to my youth.

Led Zep made some great albums and I don't wanna compare!
Jimmy Page "Yardbirds" formed the New Yardbirds in 1968 and in the end of 1968
Led Zeppelin was formed after Keith Moons discription of a bad performance;
"Goin down like a led zeppelin".
The Roots of Led Zeppelin cd;
1.Little Richard-Long Tall Sally
2.Garnet Mimms-As long as I have you
3.Robert Johnson-Travelling Riverside Blues
4.Bukka White-Shake'em down
5.Santa & Johnny-Summertime
6.Bert Jansch-Blackwater side
7.John Rebourn-Nobody's Fault but mine
8.Spirit-Fresh Garbage
9.Muddy Waters-You need love
10.Howlin Wolf-Killing Floor
11.Blind Willie Johnson-In my time of dying
12.Davey Graham-She moved thru the bizarre/blue ragga
13.Joan Baez-Baby I'm gonna leave you
14.John Fahey-Dance of the inhabitants of the palace of King Phillip X1V of Spain
15.Owen Hand-She like it.

I loved it, but then I read later that Mr. Black said the same thing when The Who were being honored, so... he's free with the praise. What are you gonna do.

The moment jack black said at the Kennedy Center Honors, they were "the greatest rock band in history....better than the beatles and better than the stones".....i turned it off, and threw up in my mouth a little bit. Comparing the beatles and stones to Zepplin is like comparing ice cream to horse manure.....the beatles changed how music was played, recorded, distributed, written and its culture impact. The stones did almost the same thing, but in a different way....by mastering a sound and testing and succeeding in every genre, rock, blues, country, funk, disco and punk. they also created and recreated and recreated and recreated what a live concert should be.

to me, putting them in the same post, let alone sentence is just plain wrong

That says it alldrinking smiley

It is, but I wonder what Page was thinking in letting that guitar solo on - it rivals George Harrison's "All You Need is Love" solo in lameness.

I wonder if it was Pagey's comment on (some) people criticizing his technique as sloppy.

I think Jack Black was there because he's a huge Zeppelin fan so you would expect him to say they are the greatest ever just as we Stones fans say The Stones are the greatest ever- even though public opinion would say it's The Beatles.

I think if you were to poll 100 rock and roll historians/critics etc. The Beatles and Stones would finish one/two as far as the greatest bands of all time. The big question is who would be three? Zeppelin? The Who? U2? The Beach Boys?
