Mick in Performance springs immediately to mind.

Also consider David Bowie in The Man Who Fell to Earth; Art Garfunkel in Catch 22, and in Bad Timing.

Kris Kristofferson in Lone Star, Pat Garrett, and as a cameo in Alfredo Garcia.

Chuck Berry saying that he'd play for free in American Hot Wax is the ultimate pretence though.

Bowie is a very solid actor. I had a lot of practice creating characters in his music and playing Ziggy Stardust. He is fantastic in The Man Who Fell to Earth. He deftly created a character who seemed alien ated from humanity and his own existence. He was very convincingly innocent and child like. I am sure that his massive cocaine addiction helped him play an alienated character. But he was stunning none the less.

He also was very good in several other movies that proved he wasn't just a flash in the pan rock star actor wannabe. He was quite good in The Prestige, The Hunger, and several other movies. The Hunger particularly was quite good.

Roger Daltry has also show an affinity to playing characters. Again, playing Tommy several years was good training in method acting. He was quite good in McVicar, and has also made appearances in TV series as well (CIS was quite good).

Ringo Star was tagged as the natural actor form The Beatles, and was given a lot of good press for A Hard Days Night. But he really hasn't done much to show greater acting talent. The Magic Christian, he was ok, the film was so boring though, he seemed to add to the boredom. He was funny in Caveman.

John Lennon was quite good in How I Won the War, and showed potential. However, he had far too short an attention span to be a serious actor.

Mick can act. But there are times he forgets restraint and overacts. Again probably due to his experiences as a lead singer for The Rolling Stones.

Yes, Tom Waits! Great in Down By Law, but also very strong in Short Cuts. Great stream of improv from him on that one. Also quite good at chewing up the scenery in Dracula.

Meat Loaf - Fight Club, Rocky Horror Picture Show

Jim Martin (from Faith No More) - Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey - he only has one line ("What a shithead") but it's funny.

Flea (from Red Hot Chili Peppers) - his best performance was as one of the nihilists in The Big Lebowski, but he's done some other stuff.

Alice Cooper - Wayne's World

Billy Idol - The Wedding Singer - he wasn't great (he did well enough), but the scene was hilarious

Pearl Jam (just Ed, Jeff and Stone) - Singles - much like Billy, they themselves weren't that great, but the scenes are funny

Those are the ones that come to mind.

Forgot Carnal Knowledge ! Drat.

Tom Waits is an excellent actor, be it Mr Nick in the Imaginarium of Dr Panassus, Down By Law, and Renfield in Dracula.

Also, speaking of Bowie: his cameo where he kills Carl Perkins in Into The Night is pretty good.

Other cameos: Leonard Cohen as the Interpol inspector in Miami Vice is good.

Johnny Cash makes a decent fist of being the tenacious sheriff in Murder In Coweta County. Ray Charles in The Blues Brothers is excellent too, and is far better than James Brown's Old Landmark.

Levon Helm in Coal Miner's Daughter is also excellent.

Bob Dylan was good in "Pat Garrett".
Eminem was very good in "8 Mile'
Dwight Yoakam in "Sling Blade" and "Crank"
The twins from the 80's band that did "True" as the Kray brothers.

I loved him in that movie!

Off topic I know, but Beverly D'Angelo was great as Patsy Cline in Coal Miner's Daughter, she even did the vocals herself.

Carnal Knowledge...What a great movie, controversial and considered "racy" at the time, Ann Margaret and Jack Nicholson, what a team!

Roger Daltrey's tough, gritty portrayal of John McVicar, an armed robber in 1960s England who first became Public Enemy Number One [wanted dead or alive] but who later became a writer, in the 1980 film McVicar. Daltrey also performed the soundtrack. The movie trailer, a scene, and the full movie are featured in the clips below.

A couple of Art Garfunkel's movie roles have been mentioned, but in 1980 Paul Simon did quite well in the semi-autobiographical One Trick Pony. Here is the movie's title song. Great backing band from this clip, featuring King Crimson's Tony Levin on bass. The Lovin' Spoonful also reunited to perform Do You Believe in Magic in one scene from the film.

Also from the film soundtrack was this #6 U.S. hit, Late in the Evening.

Here is a live version of Late in the Evening from the 1981 Grammy Awards.

Here is a trailer for the film:

And here is a scene from the movie, which also features Lou Reed [at 0:49] as a producer. The Stones are mentioned at 5:47:

Another scene from One Trick Pony with Lou Reed as producer Steve Kunelian:

David Johansesn is great in Scrooged.

The film that made Arthur Kane attempt suicide by jumping out his third-floor window. From Rolling Stone magazine:

Around 20 years ago original New York dolls bassist Arthur "Killer" Kane was watching TV when the 1988 Bill Murray Christmas movie Scrooged came on. The sight of Dolls frontman David Johansen in a prominent role sent Kane into such a jealous rage that he beat his wife with cat furniture and then jumped out of a third story window, attempting to kill himself. Luckily, he landed on an awning and survived with minor injuries. While recuperating in the hospital he saw an ad for a free copy of the Book of Mormon. When a couple of beautiful young women personally brought it over, he was ready to convert. Within a few years the Mormon Church had completely transformed his life — he even worked at the church's Family History Library Center in Los Angeles. In 2004 his dream of a New York Dolls reunion finally came true, but just three weeks after their comeback show he died of leukemia.
