Is this Stones poster fake or true???
Posted by: benstones ()

I received from my father this poster a few years ago for my birthday.

I love it, but I checked and 1965 is NOT the first appearance of the Rolling Stones in the US (it was in 1964).

Moreover, there were no concert in June 2, 1965... (source: Rocks Off's website - setlists).

I don't know if someone who knows better me can confirm this information. Do you know this poster? Is it famous?

Thank you and happy holidays!

Benjamin.

Worth billions, I suspect. Bill looks like me in that photo, which is worrying..

You got the Sun, You got the Moon,
and you've got
The Rolling Stones

This concert might have been scheduled, and then cancelled.

I think it is fake for 2 reasons:

First, I think that it is customary to omit the year -- it is considered unnecessary -- in this sort of poster.

The second reason is more persuasive: The typeface used on this poster for the word "The" is Bookman Medium Italic WITH SWASH (swash refers to special characters and ligatures which connect special characters together). Although this font is based on the old Bookman font from the 1800s, the swash and special characters were not designed until 1975 by noted type designer Ed Benguiat for the International Typeface Corporation (ITC)

I have quite a few show posters from various artists from the 60's to the 00's, not all are authentic, some are recreations/reprints/replicas, etc. I'd never noticed it before, but you're right, none of them have the year on them.

That's not to say it can't be done. I've found a few examples (of Stones posters) with years on, some of them have the year referring to the tour, but others have the date and year of the show though.

All posters except the last one come from this thread...

Sounds like the font gives it away though apparently.

It's totally fabricated. It's not even a reproduction of an actual poster. They make tons of these fakes and sell them by the hundreds or even thousands in gift and novelty stores here in the United States and include every popular artist and group imaginable. Though they look nice and vintage they are laughable to any serious fan of said acts.

The Stones' first American live show was in '64 in San Bernadino, CA. This is bogus...as are many.

My Girlfriend's Sister has a fake Stones poster that is even more bogus. Claims it's from a show in New York in 1976...which of course never happended as they weer touring Europe that year. And to make it worse, the picture is from 1980! I have not yet had the heart to tell her how ridiculous it is.

Okay, thank you for your answers!
I was right. I will keep it because it's a nice gift, and it's not ugly...
but it's a shame to sell things like that. At least, they can copy a real poster!!

Benjamin.

I grew up two towns away from Lynn.

This poster is total trash.

1) As we all know, their first U.S. show as in San Bernadino in '64.

2) They didn't play Lynn in '65 - off the top of my head, they played the Boston Garden on the Fall '65 tour and maybe Worcester that spring. That was it for the Bay State in '65.

3) What these clowns meant was that Lynn was the first show of the '66 U.S. tour, on June 24th - not 5th. My aunt went - it ended in a riot with the crowd being teargassed during "Satisfaction".

Totally fake...if it were real, they would have photoshopped out Bill by now.
