hbwriter and swiss have it figured out, I think. And the key statement is this: Everything is out of sequence.

From the Herb Caen column on July 11,2010 in the San Francisco Chronicle

Beggars Banquet:

The Rolling Stones left the States for England with $1.2 million in hard American cash, and I begrudge them every cent. The so-called "free" concert they concocted at Altamont "set civilization back 200 years," in the considered opinion of Fillmore Bill Graham, a man who does things right. "To try to put on a thing like that in one day is a crime and a disgrace. Is it right to lure thousands of kids over there, to destroy property? Does might make right? Those ranchers should be reimbursed, every nickel" ... The Stones flew in by helicopter, "like little tin Jesuses," and flew out the same way, leaving destruction in their wake. Mick Jagger is a great entertainer, undoubtedly, but as for doing something for nothing, forget it, man. The Altamont disaster will turn into a money-making movie for the Stones ... Here's a measure of the group: two of them, with their manager, went into an Upper Grant Ave. store and suggested strongly they get everything free - "You want to do something for the Stones, don't you?" The hapless owner finally settled for cost: $433 worth of clothes. And at the Huntington Hotel, they tipped nobody. Ask Ernie the Doorman and Mac the Bellman, who wrestled their equipment into three limousines ... The Stones make no bones about their contempt for all things American, except American cash, $1.2 million of it. Bah. {sbox}

Yikes thats pretty ugly stuff from Mr. Caen. Reminds me of the story of how Keith wanted to get his new Boogie Amps for free. "The Stones don't pay for anything" I think was his quote.

Maybe it's time for another free concert in SF Golden gate park, this time they can do it right and make amends. The park is much more concert friendly these days. peace

Pretty disparaging about the Stones.

I don't know whether it was on IORR or in a book but I thought this was quite good:

Altamont - a word in rock n' roll that's synonymous with disaster.

I watched a recent-ish interview with Sam Cutler in Austrailia that was online where he said he didnt't leave Altamont after the show. He said he stayed around to clear up and that the band left in the chopper.

He may have just mis remembered.

The chopper they get in to when they are making what appears to be a speedy escape from Altamaont is the same one, or atleast same type, as the chopper we see Meredith Hunters girlfriend beside after he's been stabbed.

Even the murder was moved in the film to make it more convenient. This has been talked about in other threads over the years. The whole film is out of order and spliced to death. Voices change, murder moved, out of sequence etc.. But my favorite Stones film of all time, mostly because of the music.

I've asked Albert Maysles about these changes, he has no clue about anything.

often this happens even with the best docs - but the one that i thought was really wrong was how they make it seem like the burritos opened the show - that's just re-writing history- indefensible

Where is the image of the helicopter at Altamont? (with the girl beside it). Why pay for transporting a helicopter from Florida to California?

In the film after the the stabbing you see Meridith Hunters girlfriend being consoled beside the same make of helicopter the stones leave in soon after in the film.

Being consoled...

Stoned over filled departure.

Hbwriter is talking about an earlir scene and different make of chopper...

here's the deal -EVERYTHING is out of sequence- they are listening to brown sugar in the huntington hotel in SF - then we cut to florida- then back to alabama after some music - the holiday is in sheffield alabama - and it is still there

Oh, I'll agree with that. I used to work for a documentary filmmaker and he did this all the time: Whatever worked to fit the story he wanted to tell.

BTW here's here's Herb Caen's article from 1969.

I just read this Herb Caen article or as I would refer to it--another piece of no nothing shit from a SF newspaper Bill Graham butt kisser.
To quote the article---Here's a measure of the group: two of them, with their manager, went into an Upper Grant Ave. store and suggested strongly they get everything free - "You want to do something for the Stones, don't you?" That is his 'Bah'at the end-- I say Bah Humbug!! Made up dribble!!
That's the thank you for trying to do something nice for their fans..
