H-Dog - I've never mentioned "specifically" Taylor "re-joining" the Stones, that would only happen if Woody died or if RW takes a similiar crack at Keith during another show about Keith's song being "a bump in the road" Keith might deck him on the spot if he's in a "certain" mood.. I, like Stones40 would be more than happy with a Wyman / Taylor reunion for (1) night as long as they "rehearse" for a couple of weeks and record it to DVD for all the "old" fans to enjoy.. hell - if Cream can bury the hatchet and Eric's only doing this to help Bruce & Baker make some money, why can't Jagger/Richards do the same for Taylor - they know about his financial situation - MLC
Andy Gyons the studio engineer also said it i the book Rip This Joint and also said he never got bored of Taylor's playing and got bored after some time with hendrix and all the other guitar gods.
OpenG, you must be one of the greatest Taylor-fans around. I love his playing also, but as I learned to play myself I discovered that there's more to it than noodlin' them blues/spanish/jazz-scales.
For me a good guitar player writes songs, knows where to put the spice in a song and knows how to interplay w other bandmembers.
Taylor was at his best playing leads. He also invented some solo-based fill-ins (like on YCAGWYW etc) that were pure magic, but I can't see Taylor "carry" a song, and make it swing as well. He needs someone around him to do that, and that is well proven at his shows. He hasn't even written 15 decent songs during his career, and that underlines his problem.
But for the stones, with Keith accepting his part - he was good for the band.
listen to Taylor's Chunky rhythm on Carol and Little Queenie on Ya ya's watch is great rhythm on BITCH on LAG video.Taylor was more then soloing just like keith was more than a rhythm player.
The chunky rythm is carried by Keith. only bits comes from Taylor - and that's exactly my point. Even though Keith plays lead, he has to carry the song as well...
Bitch is a great riff, which I personally think Taylor invented.

Purely right, taylor is also a fantastic rhythm player. Concentrated and applied.
"Ronnie has the concentration power of a bird" (Charlie). That's what I do not support any more about him, sorry.
No way its Taylor's chunky rhythm on Carol and Little Queenie.Keith has to much to play the chuck berry licks off the verses.
Taylor plays the whole Rhythm on BITCH on LAG.Keith has to play the chuck berry patterns throughout the song.Watch the Video You can see Taylor clearly playing the rhythm on Bitch.Same from the Marques Club from 1971 watch the video and see Taylor play the rhythm.
Taylor plays rythm on Bitch, both live and in studio. But when Taylor plays rythm, he never plays it the standard way with the chords. He plays the licks up in the A-position in the blues-scale.
Taylor plays rythm when Keith plays solo on Carol and Little Queenie, but it isn't there the coolest rythm parts are. The songs start to swing f.i. in Carol when Keith comes back from soloing (great parts).
keith's extended solo on BITCH which is rare for him he came up with the idea by playing a chuck berry lick and solo backwards. You can hear those patterns throuhgout and clearly watch it from the Margue club video from 1971.The LAG video cuts away from the soloing.
"Facts: Taylor plays rythm on Bitch, both live and in studio."
I don't know much about history ... but if the riff/rythm on the studio version (I mean the first guitar you hear) is NOT keith, I'm gonna eat my guitar with mustard on top!
"Keith Richards arrived at the studio after the others had been working on this for a while with little success. He came up with the guitar riff and made it work."
Dandelion - What I was refering to in my comment about Ronnie & Keith and the "bump in the road" was at one of last years show's as Keith is about to start "his" song, (can't remember what song it was but it wasn't happy)Ronnie walked up the the mike and make that comment, refering to Keith's song being a "Bump in the road".. Keith did not appreciate the comment at all, looked at Ronnie after the song and said: got anything more to say??
You should listen to Twisted Sister for a start. Preferably live. I saw Taylor the night before Astorai and it was THEY who had lost their Swing. He swings like a Monkey! Have you heard Lost in Desert, Blues in the Morning? Not swing??? PAH!
And on topic of Bitch.
...Isn't it a Shambles these days? Just wish they'd not attempt it. (Same with Live With Me). Keith still trying to do his lead part but with absolutely zilch rythmic flow from second guitar.
Come on, the "I am drunk thread" is not so far away!

P.s. Arrangements are only a matter of taste. I truly don't mind if the main riff of Bitch is done by the brass section or by a guitar, as long as it works. Technically speaking it is a very easy riff, even MJ could play it after a day of practice. Couldn't it be that they want it this way now? It's all just a matter of taste.
Just call me old-fashioned - but I like it with guitars.
And when it comes to guitars, it's not a question of arrangement but of feel, flow, groove and effect. I prefer a full-on dynamic rhythm guitar than the non-commital (token) background scratchings. I prefer engagement. Just an opinion.

In my opinion I think Bitch is one of the worst songs they do live nowadays. The riff being played by the brass like that is just dreadful. Miss You is another.
