OT: Dusty Springfield – The essence of Easy Listening
Posted by: noughties ()

I love the big band violins,
the modest beat of the drums,
and the early 70s Vegas supper club of it all!
Her husky voice... Yeah, this is MY favourite Dusty.
Let go the early 60s upbeat pop of her,
and the “happy” upbeat R&B late 60s songs of her!
I`m for the slower late 60s songs of her!
-Just like the music you heard on the radio at daytime when you were a kid! Favourite albums:
Where Am I Going (1967),
Dusty...Definetely (1968),
See All Her Faces (1972).

Dusty's records stand up today as some of the best pop from the 60s. All of the stuff mentioned here is great. Gold -- a 2 cd set -- is a great place to start. Wishing and Hoping, You Don't Have to Say You Love Me. Am I the Same Girl, so many great songs.

Dusty in Memphis is really fine. Just One Smile written by Randy Newman is yet another great song on the LP

And of course she sang the theme song for Casino Royale in 1967.

While "The Look Of Love" was in the film, it wasn't the actual theme song...

OK, ld, thanks for the correction. Not the theme song, but the best known song (or "hit" song) from the film.

Yes "Dusty In Memphis" is definitely one to listen to.

The musicians are fantastic on this record.

Memphis was the place to record at the time.

Not only Dusty but Elvis recorded there too at this time and the resulting LP "From Elvis In Memphis" was his best record in years.

Thommie wrote: "The essence of easy listering? Burt Bacharach!"

Dusty covers Bacharach, among others.
The trouble is that
if you said you liked
Bacharach and related stuff,
you would be a despiseful person
in hip circles.

In addition, there were
the materialistic 60s;
People who drove a Ford Mustang,
read Playboy magazine and
listended to Bacharach.

Deciding to not start up another 'off-topic' thread, I thought I would merely resurrect an old one. Discussing the Stones can get tiresome, so how about exploring the finest female British vocalist in a little more detail? Right now, I'm listening to an 80's 'comeback' number; 'Time And Time Again' Like so much that went before, it's magnificent. Dusty was great and her music is, in my opinion, timeless.

I love Dusty in Memphis, and basically anything else by Dusty, but I love her earlier stuff better--all those hits she had, in the UK, anyway, before she ever went to Memphis. Wishin' and Hopin', I Only Want to Be With You, I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself, You don't Have to Say You Love Me. She used to be on Ready Steady Go all the time. (Hers is also the one guaranteed-genuine autograph I had--the Stones ones I'd rank at about 75%--because she sang at a dinner/dance at the place where my father worked, a gig that had been booked before she became famous and which she nevertheless honored. Dad got me her autograph on a menu after the show. smiling smiley )

Singer Madeline Bell told me so much about Dusty. Dusty was the best British female singer ever. Madeline worked with Dusty for such a long time amd features on so many of Dusty's recordings (she also features on YCAGWYW).

Every year Dusty's life is celebrated on Dusty Day, all proceeds are donated to a cancer charity.

One of my favorite Dusty Springfield songs:

I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself

Dusty isn't easy listening - she's more blue eyed soul and pop...at least her 60s material is.

In the 70s and 80s she worked the cabaret circuit and her creative muse left her.

But check out A Girl Called Dusty, Everything's Coming Up Dusty and one of the greatest albums of all time, Dusty In Memphis to see what she was all about.

Dusty was great and we still have all her music and videos from TV shows.
As Aquamarine said, she was always on Ready Steady Go in the '60's and also her long running own show.
I remember these shows on a Friday and Saturday evening for their great music.
Nothing like it on the box now.

One of my favourite female singers.

Listen to ' going back ' one of my favourite songs, i think it was played at her funeral.

Pet Shop Boys made her look like a drag queen in their video. Brought her career back in a big way, though.

1969 sure was a transitional time for artists like her. Modern times were knocking at the door.

Taking note of others here mentioning her appearances on Ready Steady Go!, I do believe my first exposure to her was through that show. My father would record the RSG compilations that were shown on, I think, Channel 4 in the 1980’s and early 1990’s. Her miming to I Only Want To Be With You and posing questions to the Beatles are some of my very earliest pop-music memories.

She was a pop chameleon, changing her look and sound at will. I haven't read a definitive biography on her yet. She was never huge in America. There were hit records to be sure, but I don't remember seeing her being interviewed on talk shows. There were rumors that her and Frank Sinatra got into it and that held her back in the States. When I see the clips of her in Britain she seems much more relaxed.
