Children...children. Do NOT knock Jagger for at least 48 hours.

Saddens me that Alfafa has not been mentioned as one of the greats.

As we are talking the Greatest entertainer of the 20ht century (1900-1999) you have to deal with Frank Sinatra Elvis Presley Bob Dylan Liza Minelli Louis Armstrong Robert deNiro Graucho Marx......Mick or Freddie? I don't think so...

Bob is DYLAN but hardly the greatest entertainer.
Liza had her moments but they've long past.
Bob Marley but not Jimi Hendrix...I think not.

Why are you baiting people for no reason? Not cool...I would have expected a much higher standard from someone who calls themselves backstreetboy1!

Mick Jagger.

Elvis was great (so great...). He was the king...but....he was always the same version of himself so to speak. I mean...he was so great that he need not to adapt...he imposed himself BUT he was not able to adapt to changes.

Mick got better and better every time and KNEW always what to do to adapt to changes in show business environment. And not being as good singer as Sinatra or Elvis (by the way... none of them were precisely pavarotti) what Jagger did had more more merit (as he had to start the race from behind as he was not as gifted as Sinatra or Elvis...)

Not really my style, but I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Streisand yet.

People like Sinatra and Elvis scored in every field, records, concerts, their own TV shows and movies. They were everywhere. I'm not sure that that sort of thing will ever happen again.

A great voice that I personally don't care for, but she's another one that acts as if she's doing the audience a favor by her presence. Cross her off my list!

Totally agree. Re: Jerry Lewis, I saw him stand-up about 30 years ago, he was awful, what a disappointment. I remember it well, he was the dinner show at the Sahara Tahoe, George Carlin was the late show, I went to both, no comparison!

Interesting topic. Depends what you mean by "greatest entertainer". If you mean the one who had the most impact on pop culture, I suppose it would be Elvis, although I could see an argument for the Beatles, if you allow a band as well as an individual to qualify.

My beef with Elvis has always been that he wasn't a songwriter and I think it is unfair to group him with other greats who wrote their own music.

If you mean who was the most captivating, then the list is impossibly long, although I have heard from those who saw him that Sammy Davis Jr. was it, as far as singing and dancing goes.

If you mean who reduced their audience to a quivering mess, then it would have to be the Beatles, I think.

If you mean who was the biggest star of their day, then I have a few suggestions:

Al Jolson, who straddled the vaudeville era and the advent of movies (silent and later talkies, of course).

Bing Cosby- A huge star.

Dean Martin- we think of him and the drunken schtick, but in his day he was a huge recording AND movie star.

Frank Sinatra- of course, and with the exception of a few lean years in the 50s, was a phenomenon from the late 30s to the early 80s (although his reputation was tarnished by some embarrassing performances near the end, take note, fans of this board...)

I wasn't old enough to see Elvis or the Beatles, although it seems to me that they were more popular than he was. Maybe popular isn't the right word...what I mean is, nobody captured lightning in a bottle the way they did; and it is undisputable that they left a catalogue of music (as did the Stones) that will be enjoyed for a long time. Off the top of my head I can name 10, maybe 20, hits that Elvis sang; I'm sure I could name 50 Beatles classics without thinking too hard.

In terms of global reach and impact, I think you'd have to go with Muhammed Ali

No to James Brown. Top 5 of all time: Michael Jackson, Mick, Elvis, Sinatra, McCartney. In no particular order.
