The most beautiful Stones-ballad ever.
Perfect in every way.

But who is that girl? I recall we have had some discussions about that in teh past; if memory serves at least Carly Simon was suggested...

Anyway, Jagger is always as crystal clear as he is:

But actually I don't think that there's any particular... Mick jagger, 1976

(T)he girl in Memory Motel is actually a real, independent American girl... Mick Jagger, 1978

Just noticed this thread, can't believe Memory Motel reminds others of their first love, Same here smileys with beer
Stays with you forever, especially when the memory attaches it's self to a song such as this.
Mick's vocal on this is so heartfelt on the chorus, where did that Mick go i wonder.

I really love this track. I love it a lot since I first heard it. It's delicate and inviting; easy to get into, and I find it always refreshing.
I think this is a brilliant cut that serves their legacy, and their fans, very well. I'd listen all the way through anytime, for another god-knows-how-many plays. thumbs up

I ADORE this song and one of the things I love best is the humour of the lyrics, emphasised by Mick's plaintive delivery:

'On the seventh day my eyes were all a-glaze,
We'd been ten thousand miles and been in fifteen states,
Every woman seemed to fade out of my mind,
I hit the bottle and hit the sack and cried,
What's all this laughter on the twenty-second floor?
It's just some friends of mine and they're busting down the door!'

Makes me laugh every time.

Memory Motel - a masterpiece

Do you also know those moments when you listen to a Stones song you liked but never paid lots of special attention to, and then one day you listen to the album version and it just feels like a perfect piece altogether?

With Memory Motel that was the case with me during those past few days, the song just hits in a very unique way, so impressive that it's even shivers and tears, but it's not because of the lyrics but because of the melody.

What makes this song so great to listen to? Is it Bills bass slides at the very right moment or the very special piano sounds which just sound magical, or Keith's phenomenal contribution, or Micks fantastic singing?

Right now I would sell my car to hear that song live one day.

I have a similar feeling about Moonlight Mile. But if the 2022 Stones played either of those songs I think it might ruin the mood. Sorry

It's all of it. But damn Bill could play one note, at just the right time, and make the whole emotional base of the song. No Expectations is a good example.

You're right, Stonesfan2146 , it is indeed a bitter-sweet masterpiece.

I fell in love with it as a teenager in the early 90s, it was just so evocative and shimmering.

Another thing to love about it is Keith's voice - beautifully sung and recorded (double tracked by the sounds of it).

It's a long song, but still not long enough, Beautiful

Was lucky to see Memory Motel live in 1994 , August 15th at Giants Stadium. One of the best live versions they ever did. I was so thrilled. Mick played the famous piano , sitting at a keyboard. Then Keith came in and sounded so beautiful, I was freaking out. Ronnie with a nice wahwah guitar , beautiful background vocals , musically one of the best live moments I ve seen . Beast of Burden - Out of tears - Memory Motel in a row. Later followed by a great Brand new car …just wow.

I love this song. For me, it’s all about the vocals. The way Mick sings peachy and hazel is just sooooooo good.

Same.. the vocals definitely make it, and the lyrics are some of the best they've written.

"We spent a lonely night at the Memory Motel
It's on the ocean, I guess you know it well
It took a starry to steal my breath away
Down on the water front
Her hair all drenched in spray"

"Every woman seemed to fade out of my mind
I hit the bottle and hit the sack and cried
What's all this laughter on the 22nd floor
It's just some friends of mine
And they're busting down the door "

I agree - a masterpiece, no lesser than that.

What makes it so great? I don't know, in it everything seems to work, it is such an inspired effort. A wonderful melody and structure, incredible vocals by both of them, the whole thing arranged perfectly. The atmosphere. Lyrically it is one of Mick's best efforts ever. He very rarely writes such a story over-all and now with all the descriptive details so apt.

If I have understood right, it is also a handbook example of Jagger/Richards colloboration: Mick came up with the verses and chorus and Keith added the part he also sings. Those work so perfectly together.

Bittersweet, nostalgic melancholia that the Stones do so well. It's why I love them. Sublime song and easily in my top five.

A song so perfect not even Dave Matthews could completely destroy it.
