JSF "It's just a funny session idea with a nice swaggering groove, that's all ...."

well thaen that's the case with Rough Justice, Oh No NYA, in fact most of ABB, most of Voodoo Lounge - and lots of Bridges .... etc. etc.

correct. In other words, B-side material, unfortunately on the "A"-side.

.....hard to argue the B side material on the A side ...but JSF gets a pass cause it gave some insight into their thinking at the time..they felt they had better so it was essentially thrown away...I Don't Know Why too...killer track...they blew off.

Going Down is pretty complete and stronger than most (if not all) post eighties material.

If you are referring to the backing track, alright. But there are obviously no finished vocals nor any recognisable vocal line, just plain riffing (HOT riffing, admitted). And I second the idea that these tracks give an example of their vast potential then - lots of riffs and possibilities.

And let me add: I've always loved Jiving Sister Fanny, there's just something irresistable about it (similar to Short & Curlies, IMO). But added to an album it might have been regarded as filler, nevertheless, compared to the rest of the album. It's not just plain looking at songs. It's the circumstances as well - and it's much easier for a song to shine as part of "Metamorphosis", than squeezed in between Gimmme Shelter and Live With Me.

They don't make out-takes like that any more!

...agreed ;-)

I tend to think of GD as a precursor to Brown Sugar - lots of percussive ideas too.

No, JSF, would not have worked on LIB. I was thinking more of Sticky Fingers (with some more work on it).

I guess they were writing such a lot of stuff then that they could overlook these strong out-takes.

Rockman,

Yes - my memory served me badly! I may have been confusing it with Off The Hook.
But since then, until HTW, the trend was non-album tracks as b-sides.

By the way, and Rockman will certaianly know this!,
both JSF and I Don't Know Why were released by Decca in Uk on 1975.

I don't think either hit the 'top 40'

I Don't Know Why US #42, UK higher (or better: lower...) than #50
But JSF was flipside of Out Of Time: UK #45, US higher/lower (see above) than 50.
Metamorphosis US #8 (!!!; Made In The Shade at the same time #6!!!), UK #27
Not bad for a rarities record, rather obscurely mixed in titles and style...

Some trivia: "I Don't Know Why" as released on Metamorphosis is actually spliced together: the part after the break is a copy of the first guitar solo and the verse after this solo. There's actually only one slide solo, the second being a copy of the first and mixed just a tad louder.
