Deadwood is one of the best shows ever but its more of a period piece than a western in the conventional sense. One of my favs for sure.

The only bad thing about Deadwood is after a marathon session of watching too much, one might come away with a bad habit of cussing like a fknmuthafkncucsukesonabitch!!. There must be more cussing per line of script in that show than any other... those fkn cvcksukers!!

Max you are totally right. I just got done rewatching the series a month or so ago and it def makes you swear like a sailor. I think that show had such a great comedic sense to it also. What a shame hbo cancelled it and I think they even admitted that themselves.

I agree they cancelled it too early... what a shame... it was great and had a bit of everything... drama, history, comedy... there was still a lot of unmined gold in them hills.

Stagecoach [1939] and just about ANY John Ford-directed western

The Rifleman-Lucas McCain was a real psychotic

And of course, Al Bundy's fave western, 'Psycho Dad'
"Killed the neighbors cat with a gun......shot his wife 'cause she weighed a ton..."

Max that scene from Deadwood you posted with Wu explaining the theft of the opium is just classic! And all that was so good about Deadwood. I really wish they would go back and finish it like they originally planned by doing a two hour HBO movie. I read the only reason they cancelled Deadwood was it was too expensive to make. A shame.

Some other great westerns, and I can't believe I forgot it is;
RIO BRAVO! That is the movie that Terrantino will screan potential girlfriends with...hey plays it and they better like it. It is a classic. Dean Martin is excellent in it.

Other great ones: Johnny Gutar, with Sterling Hayden.

I recently discovered "Wild, Wild West" -- it's like a precursor to "Batman" (the TV series I mean), really weird in a good way.

P.S. I'm a cinema buff but a bit vague on what constitutes a "Western"; is it strictly about the setting or are there other criteria?

Favorite movie is Shane. Think I saw it the first time on late night tv then went out and bought the DVD. Have also seen it on tv many time since.
Also, couple of Clint Eastwood movies, Outlaw Josey Wales and Pale Rider, which is an adaptation of Shane.

Many Hollywood Westerns were told first (and better) by Kurosawa.

Having said that, I'm surprised no one's mentioned SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON...

I don't know if it counts but I'd vote for TREASURE OF SIERRA MADRE.

OK -- I do *not* agree.

Wayne was extremely one-dimensional imo. Give me Gary Cooper or Humphrey Bogart over Wayne any day. Or Gregory Peck.

Wild Wild West is awesome. Jim was kind of like James Bond of the old West with all of his gadgets and getting out of any situation.... I still watch it, never gets old... I didnt even hate the movie although it was pretty bad.

West, Jim West..... yeah.... he never said that... but he should have. grinning smiley

Lots of clips on youtube...

but do you think bogart or cooper have the same worldwide appeal and recognition wayne does? i would think james cagney is more well known on a worldwide scale than either cooper or bogart

thumbs up Great movie, a nice little tale. I watched it recently and was surprised that I actually saw a moral/message/warning about selling out to "the man" when he comes around.

I don't know, maybe some of our international friends can chime in. If I had to bet I would think Bogart would be the most famous -- nothing Cagney did is as popular or famous as CASABLANCA.

Lots of great western movies so it's hard to choose the best ones (one that comes immediately to my mind is "The man who shot Liberty Valance").
Also many great Westerns on TV but perhaps my favourite is "Alias Smith and Jones".

Not many here would remember, but Cheyenne with Clint Walker was popular. Kind of forgotten was Hugh O'Brien in Wyatt Earp which started a craze with the toy manufacturers making the long barrel pistols. Kids dressed up like cowboys in those days.
