Ok, here's the low down on Newark from a Jersey Boy

It's a toilet, it's an absolute hellhole. It's mini Detroit...ok not quite as bad but still pretty bad

If you plan on taking NJ Transit to the Prudential Center you will be coming through Newark Penn Station. Newark Penn is filled with crackheads, vagrants, drunks in various stages of undress. You may catch some drug transactions, you will definitely hear them bellowing out stones songs before collapsing face first on the wooden benches...likely in a pool of their own urine. Just walk past them as quickly as possible

The walk to the Pru Center from the station is quick and easy...and safe. Lots of police officers on duty.

Also, if it's cold out you can get to the arena by going through the "Gateway Center" which is a long indoor skyway right outside the train station. It's safe, warm, and has plenty of spots to sit and have a bite or use the restroom
[en.wikipedia.org])

If you plan on driving, parking in and around the arena is limited, cramped, and very expensive. Expect to pay upwards of $40.

Food before the show...there is a great little bar/restaurant called "Brick City" which is accross the street from the arena on 35 Edison Place. Usually frequented by hockey fans, the food here is pretty good. Down the road (closer to the giant iron hockey player statue) you will find Edison ale house, which is decent.

A block from the arena on mulberry and greene was a placed called the arena lounge...used to be decent. A bit trendy but good mixed drinks. From what I can remember it was CLOSED due to a shooting. So heed my warning about not going to far off the beaten path here
The arena is excellent. Seats are comfortable and wide, sightlines are great, accoustics are great. Wide variety of beer choices as well as food (they have a nice Jersey Shore stand) Plenty of gluten free options, great nachos, sushi...you name it they have it. Even rolled cigars.

Just don't stray far from the arena. If you've crossed Broad Street...you're too far, turn back ;-)
.... an honest, non-politically correct statement.

We are staying at the Hilton which is directly accross the street from the train station. Do not wonder off. The arena is about a 10 minute walk, catch a cab and you are good to go.

A number of years ago my wife and I, along with another couple, took a trip to New Orleans. One night, after dinner, the girls (who kept the rental car) went to hang out at the casino while me and my buddy hung out on Bourbon St. Sometime past 2 in the morning, we decided to walk back to our hotel, I think it was the Radisson, about a 10(?) block walk from the French Quarter....
...Having a conversation with some locals the next day, we were told, that was one of the stupidest things we could have done.

Driving in for the show on the 15th, and I'll probably stay around the Pru center. Any of the hotels recommended better or worse for parking your car?

It will take you less time to walk than to find a cab. It's really very close and that part of Newark is safe- especially with all the people and police that will be in the area for the concert.

I fully expect all the people from iorr to help out the New Jersey economy and purchase a t-shirt while in the area.

That can easily be said about Atlantic City also.

We're staying at the Hilton too, will definitely want to meet up somewhere with other IORRians and Shidoobees before the concert. Afterwards I think it's prudent to head back to the hotel right away while there are still lots of people out and about, safety is in numbers. Hopefully the hotel will have a bar that's still open for a drink after the show! Friday will be a perfect day to spend in Manhattan, just a short train ride away.

Lose your dreams and you will lose your mind...

The Marriott at Newark Airport is a 10 min cab ride from The Pru. I've stayed there many times the night before an early flight out of Newark... No issues at all.

Hope the Hampton Inn at Newark airport is OK, if there are others staying there we can share cab fares !

Thanks for this info. I'm catching a 3:30 AM Amtrak train back to D.C. after the Saturday show. Doesn't sound like I want to spend 3-4 hours waiting around in Penn Station. Options?

They still have rooms at the Doubletree Hilton, I made a reservation this morning for the 15th. I'm going to keep checking to see if there are cancellations at the Penn Station Hilton, as I would rather be there.

I used to travel through Penn Station Newark every day and have yet to witness most of the stuff you are describing. There are no drug deals going on. There are some vagrants but no more than you would find at Penn Station in New York City or any other major city for that matter.

Would it be safe to take the grey line on the map from the World trade center to Penn station?

The LINES IN GRAY show the PATH train (Port Authority Trans-Hudson).
Take the train from WTC to Newark Penn Station and walk a few blocks to the Prudential Center (Marked "Stadium" on the map). All very safe... use common sense.

I think some people have watched "Escape From New York" too many times. The tourist parts of New York and the Penn Station area of Newark is all generally safe- especially if you are traveling in groups and not alone. As is the case with any other city just take reasonable precautions.

NYC resident here. Where is all this mass hysteria coming from? You people will all be perfectly ok. People have been going to NJ Devils and formerly NJ Nets games for years. Newark is fine. You are all making it seem like the shows are taking place in Baghdad.

No offense but Newark does not have exactly the safest reputation. IMO It's alot differant for locals (from NJ and NYC) going to a Devil's game; local people are far more familar with the area, transportation systems and in's and out's of who/what/where to avoid. Plenty of people will be coming from other states and country's. When going to a potentially unsafe area that I've never been (i.e. Newark) I try to get as much information on the front end rather than finding out the hard way.

Guess I have to stay at a airport hotel 13th.

Newark on the whole is probably quite dangerous but as other people have stated the Penn Station/Prudential Center area is generally safe. You will be walking amongst other people also going to the concert and I'm sure there will be plenty of security and police in the area. With thousands of people going to the same venue it should be impossible to get lost but print out a map of the area just in case. You don't want to veer too far off course and start venturing down dark side streets.

Thanks FrankM. I really appreciate the advice and I think the idea regarding printing a map of the immediate area is excellent. Of course I will try to familiarize myself with the map/area before I go but I will have it with me as a back up when I go just in case. I certainly don't want to wind up walking into the hood if I were to accidentally veer off course.

Remember, to those travelling from overseas....NJ was hard-hit by a hurricane a few weeks ago. I do not live there, but Hoboken was badly flooded.
Not sure about the relief efforts and how badly Newark got hit.

If you can afford a hotel in NYC, the train to Newark is very easy and stops only 3 or 4 blocks from the arena. A very easy walk.

Maybe some of the NY locals can advise.
