Doom and Gloom "Radio Edit"
Posted by: drewmaster ()

I personally think the Radio Edit is much better than the album version; the driving rhythm really comes through.

Any theories on why they released two versions of this track? Did they not have confidence that the album version was going to appeal to radio listeners?

Have the Stones done "radio edits" before?

which edit is the one with the video on youtube? Not sure which one I even downloaded. It drive me nuts that they don't put it out as a single on cd.

I'm with you on the radio edit. The start stop is much more effective. The studio track could have been superior but they screwed up the snare sound.. loud thud, no crack

That's the radio mix, which is also a edit.

The radio edit is the best version.

The studio version is less dynamic.

You know the version of Miss You on Jump Back/Forty Licks? That's the UK single version - no saxophone. Much shorter than the LP version. Crazy Mama, Hot Stuff, Time Waits For No One, Fool To Cry, Emotional Rescue, on Sucking In The Seventies and Forty Licks; as well as Out Of Tears, Anybody Seen My Baby, Out Of Control...and probably quite a few others, all edited to be played on the radio and fit a 45.

So, to answer your question, YES! They have.

Sorry, I meant have they used the term "radio edit" before? All those shorter versions were just butchered/ sliced up fragments of the album versions, so they could squeeze more tracks on the compilations, whereas this "radio edit" is a completely different animal from the album version. More like a remix than an edit!!

EDIT smoking smiley Never mind .... I did some investigating and found that Angie, Saint of Me, Out of Control, and a bunch of tracks from ABB (Rain Fall Down, Biggest Mistake, SOL) have "radio edit" versions.

It's a rarity on its own but not a different mix or an edited version as far I know.
Actually there are mono versions of most of 70's singles.

The Brown Sugar/Bitch/Let It Rock single was mono in the UK.

I think it's kind of funny that the Stones put out a good new song that gets a bunch of hits on YouTube, but then if you buy the multi-disc compilation that it's supposedly on, you don't get that song but an inferior version of it. Is the radio edit even for sale in any format other than iTunes? I don't even try to run iTunes on my computer any more because it messes up all my other audio and video programs.

Never checked mine : is it a mono mix or just a fold down? I know it has been discussed before. As far as I remember just a fold down (like TD) but I`m not sure.

Tom

PS It`s good to have a look in the collection here and therewinking smiley: just noticed that I have the French BS EP with picture sleeve. But it`s mono too. The UK EP (mono) has the open mouth sleeve (2nd edition).

I'm so dissapointed, what happened to Charlie? Why??
Where's his classic-drumstyle? What's that whammy-like guitar riff? Sounds crappy. Don't like it at all!

That was my reaction too when I first heard it! But if you take it for what it is ... a clever hybrid of classic Stones elements with modern production ... it gains in stature.

The same happened with Plundered My Soul. The album version was inferior to the radio mix which has a Mick Taylor's guitar higher in the mix.

Aren't the lead vocal tracks different on the two versions throughout?

You just nailed it about Plundered My Soul UK iTunes single vs the LP version. The LP version is good, of course, but the UK iTunes single version is even better. Who was in charge of that should be shot!

The Brown Sugar single is a different mix indeed. It epecially becomes clear during the last few seconds of the song, when Jimmy Miller says "Allright" followed by Keiths famous "Yeah". On the album, you only hear Keith, but not Jimmy.

Extra trivia: These mono mixes from the single were not used when the Mono Sticky Fingers Promotion Album were released to radio stations. Instead it uses fold downs from the stereo mix.
