What do you think was the best SINGLE the band ever released ? Forget about sales or chart positon, just musically. Not the best song....the best single. Please explain why you think the song you pick was the best single. Remember, forget about sales and the charts........purely music. I look forward to the responses.

Brown Sugar, Honky Tonk, Satisfaction, J.J.Flash. All the same quality: perfect!

Satisfaction wins hands down, nothing else comes close. Not only is it the best Stones single but also the greatest 45RPM single ever recorded. No one else has ever written a greater anthem in terms of noise and lyrics for the male species of this world.

Satisfaction...well lets face it, us guys spend our entire lives trying to find it. And in some ways that continual search for satisfaction is what keeps us alive and kicking.

Thanks for the riff Keith...Thanks for the lyrics Mick

Satisfaction
JJF

Those 3 ones are purely perfect...

The last one good for me is Start me up (1981 !)

Easy answer - Jumpin Jack Flash. One of the best b-sides too

PS : Everything is Turning to Gold was NEVER a single in the UK. It was a US only b-side.

Satisfaction, Jumpin' Jack Flash and Brown Sugar for sure......and I would also add my personal favourite, Start Me Up, to the mix - - it has the awesome opening riff (almost Brown Sugar Pt. 2) and is a classic in its own right.

Ride like the wind at double speed.....

Without doubt JJF: the most perfect song in the history of rock music.

"Music is the frozen tapioca in the ice chest of history."

"Shit!... No shit, awright!"

Not easy picking just one. I still have not decided......so many great songs. All down the Line, Heartbreaker, Miss You, Start me Up, Brown Sugar, SFM, Black, Last Time, 19th, Cloud, JJF, Have You Seen, IORR, Hang Fire....can't decide. Possibly a question with no definitive answer.

Brown Sugar - Charlies Drums

Hell, how can you pick just 1, or 5, or 15???
in rough order:
Brown Sugar/Bitch/Let it Rock ('71)
Have You Seen Yorur Mother, Baby.../Who's Driving My Plane? ('66)
Satisfaction / Under Assistant ('65)
JJFlash / Child Of The Moon ('68)
It's All Over Now ('64)
Street Fighting Man ('68)
We Love You / Dandelion ('67)
Miss You ('78)
Start Me Up / No Use In Crying('81)
Time Is On My Side ('64)
Last Time / Play With Fire ('65)
Not Fade Away ('64)
Undercover (12 inch) ('83)
Saint Of Me ('98)
Paint It Black ('66)
Tumbling Dice ('72)
Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo ('74)
One Hit To The Body ('86)
Everything Is Turning to Gold ('78)
Ruby Tuesday / Let's Spend Some Quality Time Together ('67)
Any Way You Look At It ('98)
Waiting On A Friend ('81)
I Wanna Be Your Man ('63)
19th Nervous Breakdown / Sad Day ('66)
Think I'm Going Mad ('84)

is that a top 25?? Honky Tonk is a classic, but never a personal favorite. I never liked 'Tell Me' for some reason - weakest song on the debut imo. I could easily added another 10 favorites. Years based on date charted. Worst lyric on a (musically cool) RS single: Love Is Strong.

I never tire of hearing Brown Sugar or The Last Time.

This is too hard to call, they
were and I'd say sometimes still are,
one of the great single bands from back in the
day of the 45 rpm record where they learnt their craft.
That said Brown Sugar, HTW, JJF, and of course Satisfaction
would be my favourites, but those are really only the
most obvious ones......................

BTW the London Singles Years SACD reissue, with all
the hits and b-sdies is pretty definitive for the ABKCO
years and I prefer putting together my own for
the seventies on, the existing collections
are usually uneven, too obvious,
or jump around too much in
their chronology.

davido, if you can get it cheap the '89 'singles collection' has the actual single version of 'Under Assistant W. Coast Promo Man' which is longer & has Mick rapping at the end 'sitting on the beach every day...breaking my ass' etc.

I say Peint it black. It's a perfect single with Long long while (mediocre song) because its from the days when singles were powerful outputs. Love it. The song is there, nothing follows it like on an LP and thats the perfect context for PIB.

Get off of my cloud opened the door to a new world to me, and in Norway it sent The Beatles down to no. 2. The drumming was terrific. Charlie at the top.
