Anyone still listening to D&G?
Posted by: micawber ()

When I first heard it, I thought: not bad. Then I listened to both versions 4-5 times at the max the day it was released. That's it. I won't give it more spins, as there is nothing more to find in. I think it's all show no substance and get's boring very fast. Not much ideas in, weak guitars, no variations. Jaggers shouting annoys me. What about you?

I've probably heard it a 100 times - still love it! But it's not on daily rotation anymore...

yes I think about the same..in fact, no attraction for this number. Disappointed by the guitars too and especially the sound that I don't like. This song is too long, they should've made a 3 mn one max.

I use to hear it once every week. I don't want to get tired of it very soon (we have only 2 new songs to enjoy, and if there is no new album...........)

My main criticism w/ this tune is a real simple basic one: I think it's too long.

I think it is too short, a guitar solo would be wellcome.
Anyway i like it too much

It's great: I switch between it and Rough Justice.

Yes, it's grown on me...although when I try to hum it I end up humming ONNYA ;-)

The big difference with songs like RJ, ONNYA and even more so "Don't Wanna Go Home" are the lyrics that are rather clever, political yet funny and unpretentious, capturing a nice "rock" spirit. It does have some sort of a purpose, it had been a long time since Mick hadn't written lyrics of interest like this.

I also think it's a bit on the winding side ... a Mick T guitar solo would've been perfect towards the end. tongue sticking out smiley

I actually seldom listen to single tracks. I'm always listening to an album, so if a song isn't tied to one, it tends to be forgotten in my house/headphones.

No. Why? Not a spectacular song.
But they do play it pretty good at the rehearsals.

Well, You don't have to play it 20 times a row like when we were teens.
Now and then and it is okay. What did you expect in 2012? None of their latest stuff had the depth of the great times. But its still not bad!

That for a Jagger solo single would've easily dun it. Too few Stones in that one.

I play it whenever I survive a plane crash, shoot zombies, think about the state of the world, or ask a girl to dance. It's only natural.

It's not calling me to play it like in the old days. I put it on a compilation amongst other songs and it was okay. I listened to it once on its own at the end and once again, okay. Since they can barely get together long enough to get their songs down on record, there's not many levels to get into. This ain't like dissecting all the different elements of Start Me Up. Rough Justice had more going on than Doom and Gloom.

I listened to Doom and Gloom for a few days but tired quickly of it. It's a B side quality track in my opinion.....

Yep, I am, and it's growing on me ... the Radio Edit version in particular. Didn't much care for it at first, but now that driving beat (a pure shot of adrenaline that mainlines right to the soul), Jagger's balls-to-the-wall vocal performance, and those fabulously-evocative lyrics about shooting up zombies and frackin' deep for oil have got me hooked like a pathetic junkie.

I don't care anymore that it's got those "modern" / ZZ Top Eliminator production values, or that Keith and Charlie are buried way down in the mix, or that it doesn't have a particularly satisfying conclusion. It is still a smoking hot number that strikes me as achieving a perfect balance between rock and roll and dance music. No, it's not Start Me Up, but it's the most enjoyable damn song of 2012, IMO.

To anyone who initially wrote it off as crap, give it another spin!
