ERIC CLAPTON TO RELEASE A LONG FORM OF "SLOWHAND"

10/10/2012

Eric Clapton plans to celebrate the 35th anniversary of his "Slowhand" album -- the one that gave us "Cocaine," "Wonderful Tonight" and "Lay Down Sally" -- with a re-release in five different configurations, ranging from a re-mastered version of the original album to a Super Deluxe Edition that includes three CDs, a DVD and a vinyl LP. Among the goodies on the various versions of the album will be four unreleased bonus tracks -- "Looking at the Rain," "Alberta," "Greyhound Bus" and "Stars, Strays and Ashtrays" -- and a concert recorded on April 27, 1977 at the Hammersmith Odeon in London. The "Slowhand" reissue will come out on November 28.

I'll be getting that one, for sure. Was hoping for a deluxe edition of Slowhand on it's 35th anniversary. The Hammersmith Odeon 1977 concert is OK, but there were some better ones, in 1978. I guess a release of the Rolling Hotel 1978 movie is out of the question...!

461 Ocean had some great Bonus stuff too, so this one might be worth grabbing.

Yes it was a good release....the bonus stuff on 461 also came from Hammersmith Odeon, just like this - only 3 years earlier
Those Hammersmith Odeon shows of 1974 were very good.....unlike most 1974 concerts, as he was so drunk on that tour

What's the name of the woman who sang with him on The Core? Great voice, whoever it was.

You would know more than I sir. Not a big fan, but I'm specifically referring to the tracks "Eric After Hours" , "B Minor Jam" and "Meet Me In The Bottom". Those are great recordings.

I saw the Behind the Sun, August and Knopfler Tours out in California. He was always good live.

Marcy Levy - yes she has a terrific voice. she was a part of his band from 1974 to 1978.

Did she ever get any kind of solo career off the ground, or was she primarily a backup singer?

Oh you mean the studio rehearsals, yes that's great stuff, too.

Behind the Sun tour....great guitar playing, but the 80s sound; both the sound of the band and the sound of his guitar; combined with the poor new material makes recordings of that tour very difficult to digest.
It probably sounded fresh back then, though, when you were standing there in your jungletrousers and red sunglasses.
Clapton didn't really get it right before 1988/1989, when it comes to live performances....after the melt down of the early/mid 80s; IMO

She was primarily a background singer. Sang for other artists than Clapton as well, I remember seeing her name on an Alice Cooper record for instance. Her solo career never took really off...at least not to my knowledge.

She renamed herself Marcella Detroit and formed Shakespear's Sister with Siobhan Fahey from Bananarama.

They had a huge selling #1 hit in the UK with this song in 1992..topped the charts for about two months.

She reverted to using 'Marcy Levy' in the late 90s.

What d'ya know. A Detroit girl. How did I not even know that? Oh, well. I've only been here since '96, and I never hear any mention of her here. Strange.

I wore Levi's...The only thing I can't forgive him for during those shows is Phil Collins.

If you've ever heard the boot 'Spider Shot' I was at that show. Sounds pretty decent to me...also the DVD of Mark and Eric at Mountain View. I was there too...not as good

Can't recall the boot title but I listened to all good sounding recordings from Behind the Sun tour, so probably that one as well. I don't revisit them often though, because of the sound and the band of his.
But maybe I'm too negative in my post above; as Clapton did some blistering guitarplaying at that tour, which makes me forget about the sound....and stuff.

one of the great things about this ec period is his rhythm section, anchored by drummer jamie oldaker. just an incredible player...his whole "tension and release" moments just define some of this music. his successor, henry spinetti, was purty fair too.

The record he did with JJ Cale several years back was one of his better releases since 1998.

I find Pilgrim a hidden gem, thoroughly underrated.

Crossroads Vol 2 Live In The 70s features some great live recordings. I think some of the bonus material on this forthcoming reissue initially appeared on that box set.

I don't really like Back Home - only two good tracks on it: it should have remained in the can.

The recent albums he has done, i.e. with Winwood live, Clapton, and with Wynton Marsalis live, are pretty good.

I thought that one was disappointing....
But I don't care for hardly any EC studio albums since the late 70s. Clapton concerts on the other hand..... that's where he really shines. He's still fantastic in concert

I saw Clappo at Hammersmith but I can't remember when. Might have been 74 or 77. The only thing I remember is being a bit disappointed that the other guitarist (George Terry?) seemed to be playing a lot of the leads.

what some ppl don't realize is that george terry was taking most of the guitar solos in that era....ec was too wasted....
