Bobby Keys MIA 1976-1982

I have noticed an absence of Bobby Keys from Stones tours in 1976, 1978 and 1981. Any one know why? I don't the Stones used a sax player in 75 or 76 or 1978, but they did have a sax player named Ernie Watts. Why no Bobby?

I think Bobby was on board during part of the 81 tour but not all.

Was fired by Mick Jagger due to his backstage antics during the 1973 European Tour. He claimed in his memoir that he left the tour of his own volition to curtail his heroin addiction. As a result of his strained relationship with Jagger, Keys only guested on some shows of the 1975 and 1978 American tours, missing the 1976 European tour completely.

In 1979, Keys was part of a Rolling Stones spin-off band The New Barbarians (which also included Ronnie Wood & Keith Richards) that played two concerts in Canada and eighteen shows across the United States in April and May 1979.

Keys performed during some songs on the 1981 tour, on which Ernie Watts was the main saxophonist. Keys was reinstated as the band's main touring saxophonist on the 1982 European Tour, together with Gene Barge. Keys played with the Stones on all subsequent tours up to his death in 2014.

Ya know, I just opened this thread and realized he wasn't at the Ahoy in 2003.

Bobby joined the 1981 tour after a while. He also guested in 1978 (in 1976, too?).

Bobby played sax at the Anaheim and Oakland shows in 1978. He was back in the studio with the band in August-September 1978 in L.A.

He played on Ronnie's GIMME SOME NECK album and in the subsequent promo films to promote the album in 1979. He played with the Stones at the Concerts for the Blind and toured with The New Barbarians that year as well. He cut tracks with Ian McLagan for his TROUBLEMAKER album during that time. He played on the EMOTIONAL RESCUE sessions.

He played with The New Barbarians at Knebworth and at their make-up show in Milwaukee (without Keith) in 1980. He appeared in the video for "Emotional Rescue" that year as well.

He played on Keith's solo sessions in 1981 as well as on Ronnie's 1,2,3,4 album that year. He spent two months on the road with the Stones that year concentrating on "his" songs while Ernie Watts handled the melody lines in something approximating Sonny Rollins' style.

The same format was followed in 1982 with Gene Barge filling in for Ernie Watts.

Apart from the information I wonder again here like I wondered many times before the distant tone when it comes to Mick. So often and so many fans here like you talk about "Mick Jagger" or even more "Jagger". Like he is a stranger, like he doesn't belong to the family. This never happens to Keith or Ronnie who are
always here Keith or Keef or Ronnie, or Ron or Woody.
What is that that it is so different with Mick?
Is it that some of us here feel a distance from him to us?
That he is not one of us, not a mate like Keith and Ronnie?
Doesn't stand on the same ground as us?
Just questions. Just thinking.Curious about your opinion.

He had an amazing career .Besides the Stones he played on major hits of John Lennon, Carly Simon, George Harrison, Joe Cocker and many others. He also I think in the 1980s played in a band with Mick Taylor and Nicky Hopkins at Woody’s on the Beach

caschimann, perhaps it's because there have been two Mick's in the band, so MJ's full name or last name is used to avoid confusion?

And as early as 75 Keith had managed to sneak him back into the band when they played in L.A.
I wonder if the famous who the f*ck is Mick Jagger T-shirt refered directly to Mick’s 73 ukase regarding Keys’ ousting from the band.

In retrospect keith was right : Keys contribution on E.R. is fabulous : the cloud of notes at the very end of E.R. - the song - is heart-melting.

Yeah Keys was among the very best and Keef knew it. thumbs up

Keys played with Leon Russell who got him into the Stones' camp in 69 and then Delaney & Bonnie with Clapton & George, then onto George's All Things Must Pass, Mad Dogs & Englishmen, followed by Bangladesh, and then all over the place, including John Lennon, Ringo, and many others.

Dude had a resume.

I met him in 1992(?) in Atlanta when Tumblin' Dice (Bobby, Mick Taylor, Ivan Neville, Ian Mac, drummer, bassist) played the Masquerade. He and Ivan were so nice to talk with, and he liked the fact that I was drinking a Miller High Life!

One for the ages was Bobby.

Wasn't he fired by Mick after he missed a gig because he found it more important to be entertained by the ladies of the road? Think I read this somewhere.

I think he did or almost missed a show or two, billing the band for champagne he filled a bathtub with, or general shenanigan's hat went a bit above and beyond.

IIRC from Bobby's autobiography, the bath tub/champagne incident was on the 1970 Tour.

In 73 had become a wreck not being able to play his parts live so Jagger shipped him home and flew in Trevor Lawrence in emergency to play the remaing shows...
Iamgine Jagger’s furor and resentment against the Texas hellion.

In 70 to impress a French a lady he filled the tub of his hotel room with expensive champagne. That cost him his entire fees from whole tour. smoking smiley
Maybe he split the bill with Keith...
