Of the studio and live albums, I would have thought 'No Security'.

It absolutely tanked when it came out and charted incredibly poorly. Maybe sales have picked up somewhat since, though.

'No Security' is out of print - even with a reissue, I doubt it'll ever see a million. Too bad, too - a weird, quirky little souvenir with some great moments.

No wonder they released 'old' material on an Exile redux this year. Those Greatest Hits packages were monsters. Unfortunately for them, '40 Licks' came out when people still bought CDs. As a matter of fact the first time I saw 'Licks' was in Times Square at Virgin Records, which doesn't exist anymore. It's too soon since 'Licks', and they simply don't have any material that hasn't been sold to death. The paltry sales for Bigger Bang, which was not a bad record (or whatever you call it now), don't augur well for new product. Maybe they should have waited until it was time to tour before raiding the Exile's vault. I guess they'll just tour the warhorses one final time and try to appeal to the widest audience for one last live victory lap around the planet. They must be having business meetings and scratching their heads trying to make this worthwhile money wise. They can't have the whole tour in China.

They clearly have oversaturated the market for live albums recently. It already was saturated after "Stripped", but then they chose to put out No Security, Live Licks and Shine A Light with the last two being released in succession even.

On the other hand, studio albums still do fairly well, so that's clearly the way to go.

Very interesting to see the large drop off in UK sales between '65 and '69. I knew from the original album stats that the figures weren't great but Beggars Banquet sales seem incredibly low, especially considering the press and mentions it has got for over forty years.

seems Andrew Oldham is right when he says the Stones were nowhere near the Beatles' sales

Live Licks and Shine A Light. Hm. And Flashpoint is their best selling live album!

SAL & Live Licks, I am not surprised.

I remember when it came out the Netherlands it sold something like 289 copies in in the first week, and 0 in the second...Most Stones fans went for the Japanese version with that extra track. Forgot which one was that actually.

I Just Want To Make Love To You was the extra track as I remember it.

Shine A Light possibly could have sold better if there was any interest and people gave a shit. But since the movie wasn't a hit and consider the releases of No Security, Forty Licks and Live Licks plus a largely ignored studio album and two live DVD sets before hand on top of two huge tours in a row, why bother?

It's true - they've relied too much on live releases. With exception of the shows and the people that bother buying live things because they want something instead of nothing because they didn't get to see them live (that would be someone like me who does buy things like No Security, Live Licks and Shine A Light and the DVD sets) there's really no market for this band anymore as a live record selling act.

No wonder the packaging for Live Licks looks like Polaroids of the video screen - that's all it was worth (although I do think disc 2 is pretty good considering the state of the "band" these days - I love The Nearness Of You and You Don't Have To Mean It).

Live Licks and Shine A Light. Hm.

SAL is a recent release though, and it came out in the filesharing era. Sales aren't actually that bad and arent really anywhere near as poor as No Security's in real terms.

A good perspective is to look at how poorly No Security charted compared to previous 'new' studio and live records. No 67 in the UK and No 34 in the US.

Consider also the fact that 'No Security''s poor sales were despite the fact that the album came out in the same week that the band launched their 1999 US tour of the same name - the same tour where for the first time they were asking fans to pay up to $300 for the top tier tickets for every show. Normally, you'd expect a tour to be a huge help to sales for a new release. Even more bizarre in that fans were shelling out unheard of sums for concert tickets yet at the same time were avoiding a live release from shows a few months earlier like the plague!

And Flashpoint is their best selling live album!

According to the above list, its actually "Stripped" - 3.8 million against 3.5 million for "Flashpoint". And "Love You Live" sold 2 million which is 4 million units as it's a double album.

'Stripped' is the one live release where they really thought outside the box concept-wise and (helped by it coming out near the peak of the 'MTV Unplugged' era) it worked a treat.

And to think that EMI actually saw fit to repackage material from this release on an album called 'Rarities' !

I didn't see that on georgelicks interesting list though

I would imagine that the Decca albums released after 1971 ('No Stone Unturned', 'Stone Age' etc) would have sold less than Rarities as they havent been available on vinyl for decades and have never been reissued on CD. Additionally, the Stones actually took out advertisements in the press advising their fans not to buy them.

These albums are listed above, but their sales figures aren't.

No Stone Unturned is actually a better compilation than some of the compilations that had official band approval.

Rarities has sold 137,000 copies in the U.S. acording to Soundscan, I guess it sold about 250k worldwide.

Yeah, I have also noticed that the miracle change - emphasized in every rock or Stones bio - from the lowest crap top the absolute greatness (SATANIC MAJESTIES->BEGGARS) does not actually correlate with the actual chart success or sales. There is no radical change there. But what is the best - that it didn't matter: the band knew they were hitting jackpot artisticwise, and were not solely looking at the charts and sales.

Anyway, it is highly interesting to notice that that the biggest sellers - despite compilations - in UK are THE ROLLING STONES (900 000) and THE ROLLING STONES NO. 2 (700 000). One can not underestimate how huge they were there at the time - and the percentage of the over-all sales of the albums them and The Beatles captured in 1964 & early-1965.

It is also funny to notice that while OUT OF OUR HEADS almost flopped in UK and reduced their sales into half or third of what it used to be for the years to come, in US album, of the same title, not just being their first #1, but almost doubled the sales of their previous albums. The peak of popularity was already over in UK but just reaching it in US. For example, the single associated with OUT OF OUR HEADS, "Satisfaction" was their first number one and first real super hit in US, but in UK it actually sold less than the previous single, "The Last Time"...

One could say that it was the summer 1965 when the biggest fan base or the context the Stones had, would transform to the other side of Atlantic, and The Stones turned out to be truely an "international" act for good.

Thanks georgelicks for the statistics! They would desire a thread of their own!

well, from the selling figures been forgotten
Russia
South America
Philippines are all other "poor" countries, and its impossible to know exact number of albums they have sold.

170million in,and as some them are/were 2Lp´s/2cd´s,you can add easily few million more.

So,i think actual real number is close to 220million,which isn´t bad at all.

all these numbers and tables are useless - unless there is some reflexion about the growth of the market for popular music. (the market was rather small in the early sixties etc. Thus selling 100.000 copies of an album in the mid sixties equals maybe selling two million in the 90s)

I'm not sure the Beatles were chasing sales with the White Album but they got them. It still doesn't explain how Beggars, with two of their most iconic songs and coming off of a classic single has, according to these figures, failed to sell in the UK over four decades. There's no answer, but it is baffling to me.

But these figures show that despite having strong sales consistently for over 45 years, which is admirable in itself, they have for some reason never had a monster, career defining album. Critical success yes, popular success less so.

Led Zeps UK figures would be interesting to see,if only to see if the gap was as large as you would presume in US sales.

The tickets went on sale about a week after the album came out, which was what I meant, though!
