Henry Winkler (the Fonz) blown off by Mick
Date: July 14, 2022 14:11

Doesn’t say when this happened but must have been a while ago.

From yahoo TV:

Henry Winkler dropped by Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Wednesday, just a day after earning another Emmy nomination for his performance in the HBO series Barry. And he shared with guest-host Anthony Anderson one of the most awkward times he became starstruck.

“I was in a restaurant, and I walked up to Mick Jagger and I said, ‘Hello, I'm Henry Winkler and I have all of your albums,’” Winkler recalled.

Jagger is of course the legendary frontman for the Rolling Stones, but when Winkler met him, he didn’t get no satisfaction. Despite playing iconic cool guy Arthur Fonzarelli on Happy Days, Jagger treated the actor like a beast of burden and blew him off.

While the interaction was embarrassing, at least he learned a valuable lesson: You can’t always get what you want.

“I slunk out of the restaurant,” recalled Winkler. He told the rock star, “‘I am so sorry. I didn't mean to disturb you. Enjoy the sushi. It was such a pleasure. I love your outfit.’”

I hate to think of Mick of anything less than perfect but alas, he is a human being, and I would also be annoyed at being interrupted during my dinner.

Maybe Henry Winkler appeared as if Mick has immediately to sign all albums .... spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

I did wonder if that was going to be a Bowie / Jagger styled story but, no, at least Fonzie got to hang around with Lennon for the day.

From one TV celebrity to another MEGA STAR. He should not be offended and should have left Mick alone. Winkler should have known, I'm sure he didn't like being interrupted by fans while eating dinner when he was in his prime.

Plus Mick probably has no idea who Winkler is.

Right. Mick did not know this guy coming up to him and saying, "I am such a fan". Or Mick dimly knew but was not sure of much. Could have been a Fonz imitator and scammer.

It is so hard for a little celebtity to be treated like a usual Joe?

Answer from the Rolling Stones frontman could have been :

"Hi, I'm Mick Jagger and I would like to enjoy my dinner in private".

And to be honest I know who "Fonzie" is\was but I don't remember having associated the name Henry Winkler with the name of the caracter.

And to last, everytime a star doesn't play the game of being a celebrity it turns out to be acting like a douchebag.

In a perfect world, once off stage, I mean off duty, a celebrity would return to be almost anon.

maybe depending on when this happened he would have had no way of knowing who henry winkler was

did happy days air in the uk or in broader europe during the 70's and 80's?

and if it did was it popular?

Happy Day’s aired in the U.K. throughout the show’s prime. I remember the repeats in the 90’s. It was a popular show, globally. There’s absolutely no way Mick wouldn’t have known who he was.

ok in that case maybe mick wasn't a fan like me

i mean i love a lot of 70's sitcoms

all in the family, the jeffersons, soap, barney miller, taxi etc. etc.

so many great choices

but i've never been able to get into happy days

One thing is certain - Henry Winkler is a much better actor than Mick Jagger.

There is no denying that one bit at all . Plus he is really good as he won on Emmy this Year for his role on the HBO Series Barry , playing Gene Couisineau . A very top notch acting job IMHO and the Emmy solidifies that !

Well it doesn't say what Mick actually said.

If Mick said "Hi" and then returned back to his meal...that could come across as being 'blown off' I would imagine.

I mean I don't think MJ is totally antisocial. What did he do, glare at him without saying anything? Or, "Go F yourself Fonzie!"?

A little detail is required before we get our knickers in a twist.

Winkler in real life doesn't look like the Fonzy character at all, so probably Mick didn't have a clue who he was.

I have no idea who Henry Winkler is and neither who "the Fonz" is. Probably Mick didn't have either and just wanted his privacy.

Jagger was 30 when the first episode of "Happy days" was aired (1974). It's a kids/family show really. I don't think Jagger ever watched it.
And I don't know if it was shown on British TV? The first episode was aired on Swedish TV in 1977. It was very popular over here.
Most people, between 50 and 70, I guess, remember Fonzie here.

If Mick says "Hello" to one or signs for one, then people would continue to bother him all night. Perhaps, he was not in the mood and just wanted to enjoy his meal.

Is it amusing to anyone else on here that the Rolling Stones - the actual band, the Rolling Stones! - are currently on tour celebrating 60 years and there is an honest-to-goodness thread about a brief encounter between Mick Jagger and the Fonz? Aaaayyy thumbs up Shudder to think what people are going to talk about when the Stones finally shut it all down.
