I was away at summer camp when the moon landing took place. I remember the counselors leading us, in the middle of the night, to the "mess hall" so we could watch the moonwalk on television. It was about 3 AM eastern standard time when he took that first step. Most of the kids had fallen asleep by then, but not me. I remember it very well.

20th July 1969

One of the most memorable days of my life.

For those who are too young... you have no idea what it was like to feel so much hope.

Probably the greatest event for mankind in my lifetime was the Apollo 11 mission. RIP Neil Armstrong - a hero to lead them all.

He made the greatest journey of all when he was alive. Now, I wish him well on his last journey to the stars.

A little known fact about the first manned moon landing is that you have more computer power sitting in your lap or on your desk than the Apollo 11 capsule had.

Imagine the audacity it takes to strap yourself on top of a Saturn V rocket and shoot yourself 384.000 km into space and become the first person to set foot on another world.

There are very, very few explorers in the history of mankind who have fundamentally changed our world as we know it, and Armstrong was one of those explorers.

Rest in peace, Neil Alden Armstrong.

1969 was fantastic, the whole world watched, entralled.

1972, we were landing men on the moon and the public were bored, the Russians had given up, politicians had their eye on the money and hope was cancelled.

Man's ultimate quest is to understand himself and the universe we are part of, the Apollo missions were at the forefront of that.

We gave up and got excited about Kojak instead.

About this Moon landing/exploration business... If humankind really went there, and spent several years striving to get there, then why haven't humans returned there in 40 years? It just doesn't fit the human pattern of exploration. Trans-oceanic travel, the Vikings and Columbus in the so-called "New World", the Northwest Passage, the populating of the United States from east to west, the North Pole, the South Pole, the bottoms of oceans, the tops of mountains--once humans explore new territory, they return to it and forge ahead with colonization. So no, sorry to all those who feel they witnessed a special moment in history and are mourning the loss of a hero today, but something about the Moon exploration story just doesn't add up...

Perhaps, after several trips to the moon, we realized that there was much we still don't know about Earth, so we spend that time building the ISS, etc. ?

BTW, there is renewed talk about returning to the moon, and beyond.

I remember well the Apollo 11 mission, even though I was pretty young. My father worked for NASA so we always went down to Cape Canaveral, FL for the Apollo launches. That July morning, I was annoyed at my mother for dragging us out of bed early to go down to the beach to wait for the Apollo 11 launch. Then, four days later me and my siblings sat on the motel bed watching the moon landing on the small TV. As a kid, what always stood out in my mind the most was the NASA guys coming back to the Polaris motel that night and making a racket jumping into the pool, many of them right in their work clothes! My mom made me go to bed soon after. After my Dad died, I got all his NASA paraphernalia, including one of the patches with this emblem, made for the Apollo 11 astronaut spacesuits.

Perhaps, but that is still supposition. It would seem that a return to the Moon would be no problem and could be done at any time, if it takes less computer power than a standard laptop to program the journey. The biggest argument against a human journey to the Moon and beyond is the intense radiation of the Van Allen belt, against which no craft or spacesuit of that time could have served as protection, the cosmic rays from which would mean instant cancer for any living organism.

Anyway, I'm too young to have been swept up in the hysteria and wonder of the time, because I was just days away from by third birthday then. A couple of years later, around 1971, me and a friend were viewing Moon photos through one of those Viewmaster reels. My friend said, "You know, we can go to the moon now." I replied, "I know," as if to say he didn't need to state the obvious, as if I didn't need to be told the sky was blue either. Such common knowledge was just accepted by someone my age, without that sense of wonder. So as an adult, it is easier for me to question the accepted version of events, to be a skeptic, if you will.

And the skeptic in me sees only the political significance behind such a perceived milestone. "One giant leap for mankind"... but only the U.S. flag is placed there...
