12 May 2022: Exile on Main St turning 50!

Today we (at least I am) are listening to Exile on Main Street in its entirety. Exactly 50 years after the official release date 12 May 1972.
No matter if it’s your favorite Stones album or not, it has an exceptional position. No other Stones album is that mythical, periphrastic and surrounded by history, stories and opinions than Exile.

I think you did. I came on board in '76 with Black and Blue but quickly learned to appreciate Exile. I have bought more copies of it than any other album.

Just one thing Thommie - what the heck does periphrastic mean? I taught English for years but you've stumped me there. It sounds a little like Blackadder the Third to me

Seems it was delayed for two weeks and didn't actually get released till the 26th, according to Nico.

Exile was postponed to May 26.

Thanks for that, explains a lot! For some reason I on the inside of the album cover wrote the date i bought it: 31 May.
I bought it as soon as it was available in my local record shop and has later wondered why it took so long to arrive. Now I know!

Maybe English isn't his first language. Let's not criticize.

I read 'periphrastic' as being talked about a lot with many thing said that were not necessarily true or to the point.

Regularly makes the rotation as my favourite album, along with Sticky & LIB. Every track is essential...one album that wouldn't benefit from any additional editing.

Could be the greatest release ever, except for other Rolling Stones releases.

THE.GREATEST.ROCK.AND.ROLL.ALBUM.EVER.

And "periphrastic" is actually an intriguing and unique description to use... and not incorrect. It is rather longer and more drawn out than it need be... but it is exactly this periphrastic element that makes the album so spectacularly fascinating and challenging.

My island album. If I had to decide for one it would surely be Exile.
I only allow it myself to listen to it on special occasions. And then only if I have time to listen the whole album. It's that holy to me.

Just agreeing with all the sentiment here: it's a great album that's become my favorite of all time. Loving Cup is my favorite Stones song, with Torn and Frayed close behind. And Tumbling Dice is there best single, in my opinion (over Gimme Shelter, Brown Sugar).

I'll never forget the waist high stack of Exiles LPs next to the waist high stack of Hot Rocks LPs. It was the absolute zenith for the band. A tour that made the cover of Time, and Life magazine. The Beatles were long gone. They were indeed the Kings of Rock and Roll.

I never had trouble with the album. Liked it straight off. It was THE album of the summer of '72. Hot summer nights, the Stones in town for a concert. It was an incredible time. Rock and Roll will never see a time like that again.

Exile is one of my favorite Stones albums, great days picking up the double vinyl in 72 and jumping in the following European tour concert!

No big deal,this album was always over rated.Give me Goats Head Soup anytime.
