Mick's vocal on the released version is the cherry on the cake.

Keith doesn't have the timbre, gravitas or the menace to do this.

Still it's not bad.

Well, I think the studio version with Keith on vocals proove you wrong. Mick almost blue-printed Keith's vocals on the finished studio version.

I hadn't heard this one before. It tells me a lot about this being a 100% Keith song. Thanks to Edith Grove for posting!

Keith certainly does not carry a song like Mick does, that's why Mick is the singer. Keith's voice is thinner.

Timbre, phrasing, gravitas and menace.

Mick's vocal is brilliant on top of a brilliant Keith track.

In most cases I would have agreed with you, but after hearing Keith here on GS, I know who made Mick's vocal lines.

Of course Mick is the better singer.

Gotta agree with DandelionPowderman.
if you listen to the early sloppy and rough version of GS#2 on the Let it Bleed Sessions you hear a different Mick.
seems like Keith had the cues and phrasing laid out first.
Mick follows suite and does his magic to the final take. lets not forget Merry Clayton doing her wonderful vocal part that Mick obviously was digging a lot.

- Gimme Shelter II (MJ/KR) -Nicky Hopkins on piano, Jimmy Miller on percussion;
early version with different vocals (15th March)

Er.. all of my comments are about the performance of the vocal not about how Mick got there.

Timbre, phrasing, gravitas and menace. Except for some (not all) of the phrasing there is no way Keith could have pulled this song off like Mick did.

Without a doubt Mick's vocal is better, brilliant in fact, uniquely Mick.

In fact.. if you comapre the two.. Mick changed the melody slightly...

umm see the the storm is THREATENING, my very life today, if I don't get some SHELTER...

Little things make a big difference.

Keiths vocal is dynamically flat and samey, Micks is more impassioned and lively.

Er, Keith's vocals are obviously just guide vocals for Mick to sing. You'd never give 110% laying down the guide vocals.

I have that version on this bootleg from '93:
rolling stones
the anniversary 30 years live on stage

no guitar hero game out at the time.

it's also on the Let it Bleed Sessions boot where You Got The Silver with Micks vocals can be found.

Found it on my boot - "Mono Edition". Here's the back cover

But Mick is clearly audible here. So this can“t be a guide vocal. And what is this early version with Mick singing a different meldoy?

went to the new Bourne movie yesterday and saw this preview of the movie Flight which uses Gimme Shelter.....sounded amazing...as always...[www.huffingtonpost.com]

I saw the same preview yesterday before the same movie in a cinema with a powerful, state-of-the art sound system and was in heaven when GIMME SHELTER played.

I've had this for years on some bootleg called "Beggars Breakfast." Many other cool song versions on it.

"Take all the pain...It's yours anyway"

Question: Does anyone have a 40-year-old bootleg LP with this track on it? Or did it only "come to light" sometime after the appearance of the "Guitar Hero" game?

This track came from a batch of tapes provided by Jimmy Miller. He made tapes for friends when he lived in London, producing Primal Scream in the early 90's. Some tapes where sold through Sotheby's, and most of the Beggars/LIB and Exile outtakes available today come from Miller.

I guess that if you don't hear that Keith is singing GS here you must be deaf.

I'm sure it's the work of a fiendish American trickster, intended to deceive the good people of Europe.

Keep on guessing, but that's a stupid thing to say.
Yeah, it could be Keith Richards - but it could easily be a fake Keith as well. If you're so positive about things like this; join More Hot Rocks and play the lottery. I always doubted this Gimme Shelter. Could be Keith. Could be not. Could be you.

Nah, can't be me, I'm a better singer.

Anyways, this track is from a batch of Jimmy Miller's tapes. So if it is a fake Keith then indeed Paul is dead.

Keith's voice has changed over the years. Higher pitched, nazzely, wiskey sounding, etc. This was Keith's voice around the 68 69 period. Same timbre.

Remember is was keith that wrote this. It would be Mick putting his spin on it. Not the other way around.
