I am sickened by this latest example of bullshit and greed in the music business.
Managers, agents, promoters, and attorneys constantly poison the concert business and drain the fun right out of everything.

Um, in this case it's the band members who instigated both sides of this mess.

if kurt wants to rant, pls don't get in the way with facts. ranting is good for the soul...or something...

Good call StonesTod, I DO want to rant. It's truly good for nothing...

R: I think in this case, it's the record company executives and the attorneys who are truly at fault. Geils' solo record deal with Fracasshole Records is what started this whole mess. I think the rest of the guys said: "Screw you, we'll go out without him" as a ploy to make it go away. Too bad their strategy backfired and now the lawyers take over...

These guys were/are an awesome blues/R&B cover band, but their own material is so bad, I am embarrassed for them. Listening to "centerfold" is three minutes of your life wasted that you will never get back.

hey c'mon

monkey island is one thing... but centerfold and freeze frame and that stuff is totally another; i mean that stuff is pure schlock

i like the monkey island record, wreckage is one of my favorite geils tunes, and the track monkey island has that cool piano intro. i mean it coulda stopped there, after that, but oh well.

monkey island does have moments of sleekness, but at least its R & B sleekness

freeze frame was when they went way sleek and went 'pop'

or jumped the shark

the commercial sound actually really started with 'sanctuary' as some tracks there were pretty poppy and commercial (Take it Back, for example)

its probably no coincidence that sleeker sound began when they switched labels off atlantic to EMI

sanctuary is a great song though and so is teresa

I tend to agree that the "older" J Geils is the real deal before they went all commercial..FULL HOUSE is one of the best live LPS of all time...

Worth seeing anyway

I politely disagree.

I'm sure that the music will be great,as the remaining cast of characters are top notch pros.

But...the ticket-buying fans must, at some point, speak loudly and proudly with their wallets. Buying a ticket to this "sham" only encourages the industry to continually screw with the public.

At least it will solve one problem:
Now, when the morons screaming for 'Centerfold' ask each other "Which one is J. Geils???" The answer will clearly be "None of them!"

Piss on the wall.

exactly. j. geils band touring without j. geils. what a pile of crap. the only interest i have with this band is if they go back to their roots. "full house", "bloodshot", those were fantastic discs! the later, 80's "hits" are commercial sell-out tripe. saw them open for the stones in 82 and the rot had already set in. go back in the direction of your roots and pick up your guitarist along the way. otherwise i agree with kurt. it's a sham.

there's a zillion worse lines than that

for one quick example how about "There were plants and birds and rocks and things" by America (Horse with No Name)

rocks and 'things??'

they're fricken cactuses, ok? or maybe lizards

or "He could throw that speed ball by you / make you look like a fool" (springsteen)

i hate to break it to bruce but its a FASTBALL, ok? nolan ryan threw FASTBALLS. belushi took SPEEDBALLS and killed himself

I have to admit, for me, J.Geils is just as important to the band as any of the other musicians maybe just below Wolf.

His riffs and leads define the band as much or more than Magic Dick's harp.

Looking at their setlist from recent mini-tours over the past couple of Summers, they seem to concentrate on playing the Full House era material.

As for stupid lyrics...every band with any longevity has their share. I like much of J Geils original material, but their blues covers are where they have always shined. From Homework to John Lee Hooker's 'Serves You Right To Suffer' they put a rock edge to some blues that really works.

Lyrics are important to you, right? Then you should really slag the Stones for making loads of horrendous songs lyric-wise smiling smiley

Seriously, this band has probably made round 50 top class tracks. Listen to the brilliant Sanctuary-album, for instance.

I'm a fan of all eras of the J. Geils Band (that include Wolf), even the newwave early 80s (probably because that was my first exposure to the band). But after dabling in that for a bit I agreed with Wolf that it was time to get back to their roots. What a shame they threw him out over it and put out that abomination, effectively killing off the band in its height of popularity. Then, out of the blue in 1999, I'm watching David Letterman and on comes a reunited J. Giels Band. I had no idea they were back together, but it was only for a short 13-date tour. Then, in the past few years, they've been playing infrequent dates together (opening Aerosmith at Fenway, etc.). So I was surprised and confused to find them doing this tour w/o J. Geils? He's been touring solo off and on over the past few years, so I don't undertand what happned here.

On a side note, though it will probably never happen, they need to properly remaster the entire catalog. A couple of years ago Rhino announced (tracklisting, artwork and all) a 2-CD deluxe edition of Full House. It consisted of the two complete shows at the Cinderella Ballroom in Detriot that made up the original live album. Of course, the band got wind of it and had it pulled at the last minute. Why? Man, would I love to get my hands on a copy of that.

EDIT: Here's a link showing the pulled Full House Deluxe Edition:

Peter Wolf's last solo record was incredible. He at least still has something to say, musically. The '99 Tour, from what I understand, was supposed to be a big tour...but no one wanted them. Promoters thought they would not be able to draw, and they were, sadly, correct.

This tour features a free show at the New York State Fair in Syracuse, and a show in Buffalo (that I will be at) where tix are $10 in advance. At least that guarantees a good crowd. The Buffalo show (assuming it doesn't get stopped because of this suit) should draw 10,000 people.

Actually, I'm not that much into lyrics.

I disagree with the person that thought the lines from "Rough Justice" were worse than, "The night has dealt the fatal blow." While the Stones were being cheeky, Wolf was DEAD SERIOUS in "Monkey Island," and worse yet, he framed that bit of 10th Grade poetry into a singalong chorus!

It's pretty goofy.

But yeah, the J. Geils Band is great, no doubt. Great catalog, with plenty of classic songs.

As songwriters, perhaps we can view Wolf/Justman as their Jagger/Richards....and so imagine a similar dilemma if the Stones had been called The Brian Jones Group.

I wish J Geils was touring with the band this summer also; but I am still gonna check them out. I saw Jay perform with the band last summer in Detroit on their last gig of their brief tour. Their last two shows, both in NY were cancelled due to Hurricane Irene. Jay certainly had his moments: his lead on Lookin' for a Love and also One Last Kiss were certainly highlights. But the reality is most of the heavy lifting was done by Duke Levine, who has toured with Wolf on his latest tours. Duke will be on board this time also.

Wolf was and remains a fabulous frontman and worth going to see him. The majority of the show was the Full House era and it was fantastic. They played both Centerfold and Freeze Frame from their last record from '81. Sadly they must play these "hits" to appease the 25% of the audience who only know these songs.

I was upset when they broke up in '83 but to their credit they did not labor on and put out thirty years of crap like Aerosmith and the Stones. In Aerosmith's case they are obligated to play their recent crap like I Don't Want to Miss a thing, Cryin, Jaded, Love in an Elevator, etc. etc... Thanks, but I'll pass.

When the Geils Band hits the road now, they play mainly the stuff that made 'em famous; and while Jay Geils is sitting this out over some legal nonsense, I'll be there and it will be awesome.

That HBO show is just a bad idea... has it EVER worked out well? for any team?

And as for local teams sucking, believe me, I understand... and that was one of the reasons I enjoyed the Olympics so much.... it was fiiiinnnaaallly fun to be rooting for a (my) winning team. As a rule of thumb winning is better than losing.
