Bands with 4 great albums in a row
Posted by: 2000 LYFH ()

I assume most people would probably say that the BB/LIB/SF/EOMS run of 4 studio albums in a row is quite possibly their favorite of any band. What other combinations by the Stones or other artists would you also consider outstanding?

Some of my choices:

Beatles - Rubber Soul, Revolver, Peppers, MMT

Led Zeppelin - I, II, III, IV

Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath, Paranoid, Master Of Reality, Vol 4

Jethro Tull - Stand Up, Benefit, Aqualung, Thick As A Brick

Who - Who Sell Out, Tommy, Who's Next, Quadrophenia

Yes - The Yes Album, Fragile, Close To The Edge, Tales From Topographic Oceans

Huh? You want a hot run?

The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan (1963)

The Times They Are A-Changin' (1964)

Another Side of Bob Dylan (1964)

Bringing It All Back Home (1965)

Highway 61 Revisited (1965)

Blonde on Blonde (1966)

The Basement Tapes (1967; rel. 1975)

John Wesley Harding (1967)

Nashville Skyline (1968)

Neil Young:

Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere (1969)

After The Gold Rush (1970)

Harvest (1972)

Depending on your point of view, you could round out the four with Neil Young (1969) on the front end or with Time Fades Away (1973) on the back end. (I don't count the Journey Through The Past soundtrack as it was by all accounts a Warner/Reprise scam on Neil.) You could also add CSNY's Deja Vu (1970) or Four Way Street (1971).

More than that, you could certainly argue that the run of great albums continues through On The Beach (1974) and Tonight's The Night (1975) and Zuma (1975).

How about twenty years later?

Freedom (1989)

Ragged Glory (1990)

Harvest Moon (1992)

Sleeps With Angels (1994)

PS:

Re: The Beatles, I would drip Magical Mystery Tour and add Help!

The Smiths
Meat Is Murder
The Queen is Dead
Strangeways, Here We Come

With Hatful of Hollow and The World Wont Listen in the same time period-what a band!

QUEEN
Queen
Queen 2
Sheer Heart Attack
A Night At The Opera

Really wanted to get Kate Bush in there as Never For Ever, The Dreaming and The Hounds of Love are all fantastic but the albums either side, Lionheart and The Sensual World are not quite of the same standard

One could also pick pretty much any 4 album run by J. Geils Band. I'll go with:

Monkey Island
Sanctuary
Love Stinks
Freeze Frame

This run would begin with "Blow Your Face Out" if live albums counted.
