Could be - if they hadn't allowed Chuck to take over, it would still have been a guitar band and not a plink, plonk band.
Maybe it is all because of Keith's lazyness. It is thime to bash Keith.

That is an amusing combo of favorites there. I've nothing against Toto really, they are what they are, but I'd love to see Donald Fagen's reaction to your post.
I like the Start Me Up video as well--because of the no frills approach. For many people my age just getting into music/Stones for the first time, that vid was the prime first introduction to the band. And the SMU vid makes up for its starkness by highlighting the faces and the personalities of the band, which at the time proved to be engaging...
It was cheap is what it was!
There's quite a few of those. Shattered, She's So Cold, Pretty Beat Up, Sad, sad, sad.

1. Neighbors (thus starting a period where they just shouted the name of the song over and over).
2. Let's Spend the Night Together (the movie, which is absolutely joyless and canned compared to the Hampton TV special. And what the hell was the cockeye fashion statement Mick was making with kneepads and garish colors? And was carried over to the '82 Europe tour).
3. Start Me Up video - (the cheapest, most amateurish video for a rock classic ever filmed).
4. Undercover, Dirty Work & Steel Wheels album covers. (The troika of WTF?)
5. Calling Undercover an album when it was really just an A-side single Undercover with She Was Hot as the B-Side.
Somebody already mentioned the Steel Wheels tour. It was magnificient in some ways, but its vastness of stage destroyed Bill's effectiveness to influence the sound.

I think everyone here has forgotten the single most heinous 80s crime of all--Bill Wyman's greedy Smith-eating grin in virtually every band photo taken during 1989-90.

Getting into the Stones' music in 1993, this era had just passed. The reunion of the Stones was also an artistic comeback for them but their way leading to a return to form on "Flashpoint" and the tour which it was culled from, began earlier.
To this listener, the nadir of the era is found in around 1985 as can be witnessed on the "She's the Boss" album. Yet, they did not bounce back right away because "Dirty Work" still shows that the band was not in shape, as Jagger said.
I don't get the bashing for "Primitive Cool" because it's got some great songs, too, and has aged rather well. In fact, I prefer it over "Steel Wheels" which has aged worse, despite having some good songs, too.
"State Of Shock" could have been Jagger handing the reigns over to Jackson but luckily, he took them back. That was not so easy for McCartney as it was for Jagger ...
