Absolutely sensational song that has sex oozing out of every single note. This was Brian's baby and for him to get a blues song and especially a thinly-disguised ode to a cock to No 1 in the UK charts was incredible.

Yes, sensational is the word to describe this one. I would add that it not only drips sex from every note, but foreboding and menace and mystery and attitude as well. And you can trace the lineage of so much of the Stones later work to this one ... Midnight Rambler, for example, owes a great deal to LRR.

To me, this is Willie Dixon's finest moment as a songwriter; it just grabs the listener and won't let go (unlike the tepid Little Baby, discussed a few weeks ago). And the Stones knock it out of the park every time, from their shimmering 1964 masterpiece, to the '89 live slow-burn that features Clapton's devastating guitar solo, to Keith's haunting acoustic rehearsal with the great James Cotton, this one always blows the roof off the joint.

If you haven't listened to Howlin' Wolf's version of Little red rooster on his album The London Howlin' Wolf Sessions please do, it is very different from the Stones' Version but also a classic.

One of Jagger and Jones finest moments. The slide is the signature and Jagger's attitude drios of sex and menace. Great song!

I thought the version on "Love You Live" was one of the best live Rolling Stones recordings (and about the only good thing on that record). When "the dogs begin to bark," Kieth's guitar and Woods' guitars start barking. I like how low-key they made it, like a real old Chicago blues song.

Whenever I listen to this track, I think of Brian Jones. I think 'Little Red Rooster' and a few other tracks are true examples of what he envisioned for his group (like 'I just can't be satisfied...').

But it was not to be.

Does anybody have a clue on how to get close to that great nasty LLR slide sound?

In particular when you play the high notes up the neck-

High action and heavy gauge I would say, but, is there any "secret" secret?

Depends what guitar you're using. I play it sometimes on a cheap old Telecaster in open D tuning (the original might have been in open G, can't remember, not sure it's that important) and I typically use the neck pickup with some of the tone rolled off. And I use quite a heavy slide. Overdrive the amp just a little bit and the results are not exact, but still pretty satisfying.

Simply put: I love this song. Brian excels on slide, just brilliant! On my top 5 list of Stones songs ever. cool smiley

And no, the Stones with Clapton version is not good. In fact it's horrible.

With the slide I normally use a Telecaster of an SG. And yes, my slide is heavy and the amp always overdriven! But what I get is close to the Love You Live slide sound. It lacks the brilliant sound of the studio version.
