The riff on Money for Nothing always sounded vaguely like JJF to my ears.

Maybe that's why Keith likes it...he forgot he wrote it.

Listen to "Locked Away", the last part with the nice solo outro. Very 'Knopfleresque' sound and even style, as much as Keith is capable of, anyway. You're right about Money for Nothing. I always assumed it was deliberate, but who
knows?

Wow, cobwebs... but I think I've heard that Mark Knopfler did in fact have the Stones in mind with that great riff....

That Keith would ever point to Dire Straits as a "top 10" record is sorta surprising, nonetheless. I mean, where's Highway to Hell on this list???

I know Knopfler has mentioend that he started out a vision for some of his songs as being "a Stonesy type of song" but that they evolved into something else. (Sorry for the vagueness...the exact songs escape me at the moment...)

Even though he seems on the surface like he's a million miles away from Keith as a player, I think he has an appreciation for the Stones. It doesn't come out much, but it's there. Nice, sort of, to see Keith reciprocate that appreciation.

There's a lot of other BBC programs featuring the Stones:

How did Keith's apples fall so far from the tree of his musical tastes? I can see the Little Walter and Otis Redding connection but the rest seem pretty far from what I would have guessed. Where is Muddy Waters in the list? peace

This is the first time I've heard Keith saying he likes anything remotely current..(recorded in '86)

He produced Bob Dylan's "Infidels", which had Taylor all over the main tracks, so I'd agree. And he is a million miles away from Keith as a player, but I'll repeat from a different thread, listen to Keith's ending solo to "Locked Away". The licks and the sound of the guitar sound like a less slick Mark Knopfler.

Taylor was Dylan's choice. Knopfler wanted Billy Gibbons for INFIDELS.
