Tour opening acts, past and 2021
Posted by: dkwalika ()

I would like to hear more reviews of the opening acts from this tour. I don't even know if they have had opening acts for every show. I've been able to hear some great bands over the years:

Eagles and Rufus (75), Living Colour (89), Blues Traveler (97), Wide Mouth Mason (99), No Doubt (02), Pretenders (my favorite, by far 02), Buddy Guy (05 and 15), St. Paul and the Broken Bones (19).

Let us know if you've heard some surprises, good or bad, or just meh, even.

Buddy Guy and Junior Wells - Paris september 1970, three shows
Clapton flew from London, and played just for one song during one show (don't know which)
Never been able to listen to it.
Critics said the crowd didn't care and even booed Clapton, so impatient for the Stones.

2003 or 2006, maybe in Boston or Chicago ? First part was Johnny Lang, then The Pretenders. John McEnroe joined The Pretenders for one song in the middle of the set and played real guitar (no air guitar with a racket spinning smiley sticking its tongue out)

Prince 1981 - He almost got lynched by the mob. He and Jagger talked each of that experience.

Los Angeles 1989 : Guns N' Roses was opening for the Stones. Axl Rose did'nt show up. Stones entourage had previously hired for the LA sets some ex cop with influence who would smooth anything wrong that would come up. It worked. The ex-cop sent police officers in uniform to pick Axl Rose for the show.

J Geils Band- '81 will always be my favorite opening act.
Two all time favorite bands for two shows in Seattle at the Kingdome.

Local reporter wrote a piece back then about riding in the elevator with Mick in disguise coming down to catch the J Geils set from the floor.. cool smiley
Peter Wolf is the only frontman that I might rank above Mick for a live show. smileys with beer

1989 - Living Colour. I went into the show knowing more about Living Colour than I did about the Stones. I was 15 and a big fan of Living Colour, and they sounded great. After the show I was still a big fan of Living Colour, but I left feeling like I had a lot of work to do when it came to the Stones. The Stones have since become my favorite band by a Moonlight Mile.

1994 (Two Shows) - Lenny Kravitz, Spin Doctors. Lenny was great, and I remember that there were reports that he had been spotted riding his motorcycle around town before the show. Spin Doctors were not great. I thought the crowd might start throwing things at them, but maybe that's my memory playing tricks on me.

1997 (Four Shows) - Blues Traveler, Third Eye Blind. Both bands were good enough. I don't remember any greatness or otherwise.

1998 - Buddy Guy. Outstanding.

1999 (Four Shows) - Jonny Lang, Wide Mouth Mason. Same as '97, everybody was good enough, though nothing memorable.

2002 (Three Shows) - The Pretenders, Dr. John/Shemekia Copeland. All were great.

2003 (Two Shows) - Ryan Adams. Not memorable, bordering on bad.

2006 - Elvis Costello. Missed it due to awful traffic.

2013 - No Opener, but special guest Sheryl Crow on "All Down The Line".

2015 - Buddy Guy. Outstanding yet again. Buddy came out to play "Champagne and Reefer" with the Stones, too. Great stuff.

2019 - (Two Shows) - St. Paul & The Broken Bones, Whiskey Myers. Heard about 1 song from each. Nothing special that I recall.

Peter Tosh in 1978, Solomon Burke in 2002, Susan Tedeschi (I think it was on bigger bang but might've been licks) were my favorites. Motley Crue weren't bad either on Bigger Bang if you can tune out the singer. I saw 2 shows with them opening. They tried to get the crowd to sing along with their big power ballad & were met with deafening silence. It was hilarious. Sheryl Crow was good on Licks, too. & the aforementioned J Geils in 1981. There have been some really bad ones, too. Probably more than the good ones. Oh & Promise of the Real were pretty good in 2019. I had to sit through Dave Matthews toward the end of Bang. Torture! Not a fave of mine.

I totally agree with you. Although I like them a lot, I would not list J Geils among my top favorite bands. That said, I think Peter Wolf is the greatest frontman not named Mick Jagger. J Geils always put on a great live show, and a lot of this was due of course to Peter.

Of the 18 shows I’ve seen since 1975, 9/29/2006 Alice Cooper was the opener at Churchill Downs. As always, Alice rocked the house.

For the performer himself, Stevie Wonder gained a him a muchbigger audience for the 1972tour, which propelled him into the biggest recording artistof the early 1970s.And the 1972 tour was never topped by the Stones.Equaled in a different way

1981. George Thorogood and Journey. Raw and polished. Thorogood rocked, Journey bopped. Hour wasn’t bad and played a lot of familiar songs as Escape was released about two months prior. Thorogood nearly stole the show though.
1978. Living Colour was great. Everybody loved them.
94 Counting Cows and Blind Melon. The first was good the second was gladly missed.
97 Bules Traveler and Johnny Lang. Both ok.
99 The Corrs. Outstanding. Didn’t know their material but the sound was great.

02. The Pretenders and Ryan Adams. The first was great as you knew every song and band didn’t seem the stage was too big for them, literally and figuratively.
05 Beck anok
15 at Paul and broken bones. Excellent 19 and 21 Ghost hounds. Good. Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real was outstanding. Talent was certainly handed down from one generation to the next. Most opening acts are good. We are excited to see the Stones of which NO ONE can compare. Everyone else pales.

Knebworth didn't have a bad supporting cast did it !

[long tiring day though].

That aside, I think Spinal Tap were the support I enjoyed the most .[Twickers on the Licks tour]

They're not a band I've listened to very much on record... but they had a great energy on stage.

I just read in the news that Maneskin, an Italian group that became famous for winning the 2021 editions of San Remo and Eurovision festivals, will open for the Stones in Las Vegas.

Must be the first time ever that an Italian artist opens for the Stones not in Italy (in fact, I think that the only Italian act to open for the stones was Al Bano in 1967).

My daughters love them, and indeed they are not bad. Curious to how they will be received by a Stones crowd ...
