Could You Walk On The Water? - the unreleased 1966 album
Posted by: kowalski ()
Date: January 9, 2011 22:46

Has anyone seen this before?

I know about this lost album but it's the first time I can see the actual cover (or a draft of it).

Is that a drawing by someone or a legit rough idea of the cover?

Wonder what the track listing for this proposed album was or would have been!?

That's what I'm wondering too.

The track listing was supposed to go like this:

Side One:
"19th Nervous Breakdown"
"Sad Day"
"Take It Or Leave It"
"Think"
"Mother's Little Helper"

Side Two:
"Goin' Home"
"Sitting On A Fence"
"Doncha Bother Me"
"Ride On Baby"
"Looking Tired"

- Mothers Little Helper I (MJ/KR) -backing track
- Mothers Little Helper II (MJ/KR) -Aftermath-version
- 19th Nervous Breakdown I (MJ/KR) -same backing track as version II with earlier, rougher vocals
- 19th Nervous Breakdown II (MJ/KR) -7“-version
- Ride On Baby (MJ/KR) -STU on piano, Jack Nitzsche on piano; Flowers-version
- Sad Day (MJ/KR) -STU on organ, Jack Nitzsche on piano, 7“-version

Yup, what I meant was is that the actual rough idea for the album that was drawn by someone within the stones circle or has some fan just been a bit creative and drew it once they read about it?

I wonder if the Aftermath album art originally had the "Could You" title on it yet? In specifics, it's the U.K. version (but not the U.S. version which had "Paint It, Black" as the opening song).

Yes, but there's also the Pignose PGN-054 Could You Walk Upon The Water (The Aftermath Sessions) with alternate versions, which is of bad sonic quality but quite interesting.

It would have been an album with a lot of acoustic guitar. More than we ended up getting. Side 2 looks interesting; the sequence. Starting out w/ "Goin Home" and into "Sittin on a Fence".
In the proposed tracklist that Kowalski posted there is a real slant towards the plain, melodic tunes.
Look at what is left off "Flight 505", "Its Not Easy", "High and Dry", "Stupid Girl"; and also "Out of Time", "Lady Jane" and "Under my Thumb".

I know I read somewhere that the Stones had no intention of ever calling the album Could You Walk On The Water. Andrew Oldham said he made it up as a publicity stunt. He knew people would make a fuss about it which is what he wanted.

That's actually what I remember as well, it was only a remark to get publicity by Oldham. I believe it was even after Lennon's 'more popular than Jezus' quote.

Seems it was Decca in UK that had a problem with that title.

New Musical Express - 14th January 1966

Record Mirror - 29th January 1966

I know about this lost album but it's the first time I can see the actual cover (or a draft of it).

I would say that is a drawing of the photograph, even has the tree reflection in it.

The Stonesnet website says that the cover of what would have been this album would have been the 5 Stones with their heads sticking out of the water. [www.rollingstonesnet.com] I read that somewhere on there, that would be a bit wild. This is discussed there a lot. That would have been a wild looking picture so from that vantage point, seeing that would be a rather nutty front cover, maybe it was a publicity stunt but after all, on GHS, they wore shrouds, years later after the world had changed.

In the sketch above, the place where Mick Jagger is to me looks like it could almost be Charlie Watts as much per the artist's portrature.

And Brian looks a bit like Funky Winkerbean with glasses though of course, those are the famous bags under the eyes.
