Travellin'Man 1970
Posted by: Potted Shrimp ()

Travellin' Man could easily be the best Stones outtake ever. Taylor plays some magic guitar! The song was recorded between 17 and 31 October 1970 in Olymic studios / Stargroves. But just a couple months before that (May 1970) the Stones recorded a song in the same studios called Travelling Tiger. As nobody has a tape with this songs I guess it's asking in vain, but: Could Travellin Tiger be a first version of Travellin'Man?

First released on Trident tapes / mixes (1989 / Living Legend LLRCD 039). The entire cd was a revolution back then! All song on it were never released before.

It was indeed one of the first outakes cd's but taken from vinyl, so all songs were already available before...

Hendrik, what I meant to say was that they were never released before on cd. Sometimes I type too fast and don't read the post back. But I thought It was obvious in this case.........

I love it. My favorite outtake along with Highway Child.

Of the Trident Tapes tracks, I personally preferred the likes of Blood Red Wine and Two Trains, but as a somewhat extended "heavy jam session" Travellin'Man offers a tease of what could have been, had they bothered to finish it. Strong vocal performance, superb guitar work by Keith and MT, and a generally great collective band performance.

Compare it with the crap they put out on the Four Flicks disk one studio jam sessions! Perhaps not. That would be cruel!

Ooh, I've got a cassette of the Trident Outtakes, incl. Blood Red Wine. I'll have to see if Travelin' Man is on that tape. I've got so much bloody Stones stuff that I need a secretary to help me make my list!

Travelling Man is an absolute killer - something vaguely Stoogey about it to me, same with Highway Child. Both need to be considered when assessing the greatness of the Rolling Stones.

Travellin Man was a shock for me too, the first time I heard it. Terrific groove

Couldn't agree more. Fantastic outtake.

I don't care that they didn't finish it. I love it the way it is.

Great outtake. Pity about the fade-in, though. Is the entire track available anywhere (except in The Vaults)?

No

I wonder if the Black Crowes delibrately picked up that musical line or if it was coincidental.
They are of course heavily Stones biased.
the song I'm on about is "Sting Me" from the Southern Harmony and Musical Companion.

I don't think much of it as a song (off the Trident Mixes I clearly preferred "Blood Red Whine, Going Down (not exactly a song too) and I don't Know Why) but I like the feeling of it. It just rocks!!

Speculation and aspiration are flying over
whether they include TRAVELLIN' MAN in their forthcoming box of previously unreleased materials.

i don't think i have any boots or tapes that include the beginning of the track...does any such version circulate?

I never heard any other version besides the one we all know and love Todd, though it would be interesting to know if other cuts exist. Hmmmmm,,,

It would be nice if there was a completed version of it in their vaults.

Musically, its absolutely brilliant but it's quite obviously a work in progress going by Jagger's clearly unfinished lyrics.

Chris Cross Mind does it for me. Or is it Criss Cross Man? Whatever.

I much prefer THAT sound than the later "weaving" sound of say, Respectable, and the other songs of that type. I'm not necessarily putting down the "Respectable" type of RnR songs, but a little of that goes a long way with me. Even after innumerable listens the guitars in TM still hold my interest. I also have a soft spot for Jagger's almost indecipherable singing of the lyrics.
