BTW, only Brian himself thought this song was about him. When asked, Bob said that Ballad of a
thin man was more about Brian than this one.

Never knew that Brian thought this was about him. It always somehow makes me think of Marianne as a possible target for the lyrics, although I've never really done the research to see if the timing was right.

Whoever it was, Mr. Dylan sounds really ticked off with them - and I've read somewhere that this was edited down from a much, much longer rant to form the eventual song.

Speaking of Brian, they sure could of used his skills on the harmonica for the performance of this song.

I read somewhere (where?) that it was about him - sort of.

I must say I'm suprised that many folks don't like this too much.
Beacause I really Love it, I mean when the played it Live it was a really big crowd pleaser, we where on our toes, clapping our hands and singing along with the chorous, It was simpel a Highlight !! I always wondred how a studio version whould have sounded, I don't think the Brixton version is that good.

For some reason the Stones drop the 3rd verse ..... And that's
a shame cause Jagger coulda worked the dog outta that shattering
Dylan line.........You shouldn't let other people get your kicks for you

But hey it's worth checkin' out the plodding lower-geared take of LARS
from '97 Toronto rehearsals .... And dem lazy backing vocals are infectious

A pointless, unimaginative cover.

Have to agree, should never have been done.

Hello everyone, I actually really like it.... have just listened to the version on bridges to beunos aires.. obviously with Bob Dylan. It’s well played, band tight guitars good. Surely you can enjoy it for what it is ... works well live. It’s not as good as the original but has its own merits!!

One of their all time weakest covers - wish I'd never heard it.
Similar to how they ruined the Beatles' Come Together at Desert Trip, but in that case wisely decided to never repeat that mistake again.

An unnecessary cover.

There are some good versions of this song around, but nothing beats the original version.

Not taken into consideration in most of the critiques (never been a big fan of the cover, but have enjoyed it live) is the fact that they believe it to be an homage to them, and they were doing it out of respect..
if that makes sense cool smiley

I like that, and for a band that rarely "tips their hat" to anyone, I also like that they did it for Bob, and then later The Beatles (via Paul) when they covered Come Together at Desert Trip,
thanking both artists when they performed them.
(as commented on earlier, alleging they "ruined" it, like that's even possible winking smiley)

I think they've earned some slack on these, may not be fan favorites..
"but, they like it"..

I really like it.
It was a highlight for me when was performed in stage B in Miami 1997.

has ALWAYS worked live....they milked this cover for all it's worth. I'd rather hear this than YGMR anyday!

They sure did ruin it and I agree they should never play it again.

It's excellently recorded and played. The band sounds fantastic. The more acoustic Amsterdam-version as well.

But imo it was not necessary covering it. They probably had fun doing it. Who are we to blame them?

They didn't ruin it, of course. Far from it.

I liked it. I still like it. The single was great with the extra live tracks. After VOODOO it was a welcome relief, it sounded fresh and the band sounds invigorated.

Hello again, I think it’s the pleasure of liking different things for different reasons... for the Stones. As mentioned Mick’s harmonica playing lifts this one.. it’s just the sound!!
