Rock stars growing old gracefully

Johnny Cash musically grew old gracefully with the American Recordings. Tom Jones’ recent album touches the issues of growing older. And than there’s Mick Jagger: speeding up his singing and antics up to the level of cartoonesk exaggeration.
Where will this end gracefully?

I think Pete Townshend has the final word on this, as it applies to Mick.

Isn't the statement "Rock stars growing old gracefully" a contradiction in terms?

Robert Plant grew old gracefully. At least, that's what I remember thinking the last time I saw him, on that tour he did with Alison Krauss in 2008. I considered it to have been an unfortunate development.

Mick isn't and I admire him for it.
I also intend to act foolishly until my last breath.

Ian Anderson nailed it, it's at the end of the song...

No, you're never too old to rock and roll
If you're too young to die

Is Charlie Watts a "rock star"?

Oops, someone beat me to it...then I would offer Bill Wyman as another example of exactly that.

I knew of a rock star(s) in his 70's
who turned into a daddy.......man it's sad to know they'll never have their dad once they become adults.

Johnny Cash slowly died and kept going. Tom Jones, whatever. What a bore.

Your bit about Mick Jagger?

Your opinion is wrong.

A nice one, Paul!grinning smiley Missing the 27 Club has its faults...

True that Mick's latest songs tend up sounding like Viagra-commercials, and we, not so energetic any longer target audience of his, might have troubles in following him... our asses don't move like they used to...

But then again, what it would be for Mick Jagger to 'grow up gracefully' (Right answer: to disappear for good, and stop being Mick Jagger, but let's pass that answer now).

Would it be like releasing some slooooow country ballad or an album of that stuff? American Song book stuff? Sentimental ballads? Or an album of blues covers (bloody hell, he already did it). Stop moving around, stop grinning? Not flashing that bloody 'California smile' that makes him look ageless (and he knows it)? Be serious and act like you will die next minute? Stop writing about chasing pussy or being chased by them, and do something more adult-like, like social commentary (wait a minute, is that all he does these days?). A documentation of his doctor visits? Of his problems with erection? (oh man, a sure number one hit and media would go nuts, although there he already ages go admitted he has problems with getting his rocks off?).

Perhaps we just need to cope with the way he is... He is a pretty unique figure and character. No any Tom Jones for sure... I think we have enough of aging, tired rock stars 'growing up gracefully' and giving that comfort and soundtrack for our retired home days. Yes, yes, we are old and we know will die soon. Good to have one Mick Jagger and keeping the vitality and hope alive...

Pete is a one big bullshitter but he truely got that one right...

Unless he’s secretly embracing the celibate lifestyle, there’s little-to-no chance that Mick doesn’t take Viagra. If he’s able to get an erection naturally at his age, then some of the elders amongst us should research to discover his secret!

Dude....you are either still relatively young...or have decided to age yourself.

I plan on growing old as disgracefully as possible, as Mick or Keith once said of the critics complaining they don't act their age, something like "you all are just jealous".

You are all right here.
But: The main question is
What is meant by the word „gracefully“
Imo it could have 1000 different ways
to live up to.
In the eyes of my stubborn dull neighbour
people who still listen to Rock and Pop in
their 60ies and 70ies are poor fools.
In the eyes of his attractive 25 years old
daughter people like us have grace. A lot of.
The great word gracefull deserves great spce
for interpretation.
I stood beside Keith aunt in Section A in Twickenham
in 2003. She was 85 then. And she shaked her head
like a 20 year old girl. It was one of the gracefulliest
impressions in my life. (She left after Keith set,
but until then she gave everything)smiling smiley

What I mean is this: eventually old age catches up with every one, including the Dartford Dude. How is Jagger going to adapt? I am not trying to put him down. I am interested in how to combine physical decline with great showmanship.

Growing old? These are elderly men, in or approaching their eighties- a couple of whom are undoubtedly dealing with the long term effects of decades of drug/alcohol/tobacco abuse. Its nothing short of a miracle they can do what they do, gracefully or not.

indeed, why would anyone think you were trying to 'put him down'?:

I think I certainly would like Rolling Stones to grow old disgracefully. I think it was 1989 when they were inducted into the hall of fame ?? Pete Townshend mentioned that they should grow old disgracefully..

So you are in the "Jagger wihtout Mick-Club".
It's Mick Jagger by the way.
The reason why this band is existing so long.
The main reason combined with Keih Richards guitar why it sounds different since 1962.
The voice of our life.
