OT: The Jacksons "Unity" Tour 2012

Barely any tickets at all have sold for their show in Detroit. Surprising. You'd think this would be a bigger deal, wouldn't you?

Hey, I just saw the Temptations and the Four Tops. Each group had one original member, and the place was nearly packed. We're talking four of the original Jackson 5 here, and it's their first tour since '84. I'm not saying I'm going or that it's gonna be a good show, but I am surprised it's such a non-event.

How are ticket sales in general doing?

Not really. Michael was the main draw. I mean really, to me it would be like seeing the Stones without Mick.

Dunno, but check out this seating chart of the 5,000-seat Fox Theatre in Detroit. Tickets went on sale four weeks ago. The seats represented by the black dots are still available.

It's a no brainer. They have to join forces with the Osmonds. Marlon and Merrill on the same stage? Excitement!

I am guessing a lot of listeners (enough anyway) have no clue who was or wasn't in the Temptations or most especially the Four Tops. (Top #1 Top #2 etc..).

But conversely, quite a few people know who Michael Jackson is/was. Whether it is fair or not, people see "The Jacksons" as the Jackson 5 without Michael. If we look at it that way, it's beyond The Rolling Stones without Keith Richards and actually far beyond the Rolling Stones without Charlie Watts.

But yes, I would've thought they'd have sold a few more tickets.....

Seriously, when I saw the ad for "The Jacksons" at the Fox Theatre, I thought, "Those Jacksons? Nah. Couldn't be. That'd be an arena tour, right?" Maybe it's a good thing if this tour turns out to be a total fiasco. An encouraging sign that people haven't completely lost their minds, and that faced with the decision of whether or not to spend $250.00 on a pair of tickets to a dubious evening of entertainment, might actually take a pass.

Perhaps they should utilize the latest hologram technology, and have Michael 'on stage' with them. eye rolling smiley
That would probably sell a few extra tickets...

Anyone who has ever seen The Jacksons live can tell you that they were a great group.

I'll bet it's a good show.

This is from 2001. Try and picture what this would look and sound like without Michael, and with everyone else being 10 years older. Competent, maybe, but not much in the way of charisma. They could almost be any four guys doing Jackson 5 songs.

I guess that is the way most of the people think. By hindsight Jackson Five was a templete for Michael's star to start shining and once his solo career took off, Jackson Five became worthless to exist. Even THE VICTORY, with our own Jagger, sounded a the time conceptually a bit odd deal since Michael was way too huge HUGE to fit any longer his 'reduced' role. There was a terrible disharmony within the band there that the whole thing didn't sounded natural any longer.

And seemingly Michael Jackson's legacy is such a huge phenomenon of its own that even his old band mates or 'band' are not enough to gather interest from his fans (and take part of the cake). It is like Elvis 'original' band with Scotty Moore can not really get people excited, expect some very hardcore fans.

What goes for the Stones analogy, I think the actual gap in fame is way bigger between Jacko and his brothers than with Mick and his band mates, because Michael Jackson is just so incredibly big name - way bigger than Jagger - and Mick's band includes bigger names than Michael's brothers.

The Jacksons without Michael Jackson is like The Rolling Stones with only Michael Davis left.

But I bet Michael Davis can blow a mean trombone.

Only 2 Jacksons have any degree of REAL star power, Janet being the only one alive.
