OT: How will the Stones be remembered/forgot?
Posted by: dmay ()
Date: February 24, 2021 17:28

This is an OT as the title of the article relates to John Lennon's song "Imagine" as a touchstone for what follows. It's a bit wonky, but a reference to Elvis Presley in the article made me think about the Stones (and bands/performers from the 1960s forward) and their place in the halls of time. I also thought of all the comments here regarding the magic of VHS tapes as a technological marvel. So, if y'all are ready for a deep dive into the wonky end of the pool....

In, let´s say, 50 years everything will be down
to "Satisfaction" from the "bad boys, compared
to the Beatles". Unfortunately.

Future generations will miss a lot.

They'll be remembered for Satisfaction, and as the band who could never complete their final album.

For a couple billion years as long as Mars is not swollowed by our mighty sun. Why? There is this rock on Mars called Rolling Stones Rock ... and when the first Rolling Stones fans arrive on Mars (only a matter of years) they will make sure that the rock will be immortalized (maybe as a collectors item) ...

A hundred years from now, people will know about the Beatles. They had John, Paul, George and Ringo. Bob Dylan wrote and recorded for them. Their guitarists were Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix. They had songs like Satisfaction and Stairway to Heaven. Sometimes they smashed up their instruments. They played at Woodstock and Altamont. Yoko Ono broke them up but Jagger/Richards formed a band and kept them going.

They will be remembered collectively, as part of a movement, and singularly as a long running, successful entity. The British Invasion, and especially groups active in the late 60s, will be seen as a viable art movement, akin to the Impressionists. The Stones will be as remembered for their attitude and style of dress.

Their music will be seen as more accessible than the Beatles, though the Beatles will always outdo them in the artistic arena. The Beatles and the Stones will be in their own pantheon, with only perhaps Hendrix, Cream, and Led Zeppelin a tier down.

There will always be a fascination with the Stones. Their relevant artistic history stretched almost three decades. They will have played live in front of more people than anyone, unless something unseen happens in the future. Their look, the tragedy of Brian Jones, Mick Jagger's sexuality, and just the greatness of the music will endure.

Unfortunately, I think it's too hard to convey just how cool they were to people who weren't around at the time, or close enough to it. Hopefully I'm wrong.

The Beatles are already taught at universities ensuring they will never be forgotten.

The Beatles: University of Liverpool offers master's degree in Fab Four > FAB FOUR

And:

6 Universities Where You Can Take a Class on the Beatles > Mop Tops

I thought I read somewhere a couple of years ago that a university was thinking about offering a course on the Stones (?),
but might have been another story on The Beatles, and how they blazed trails and dominated the British Invasion.
Or maybe it was a university course on Dylan, and how he became the so-called "spokesman for his generation".

Never complete their final album?

If it is never completed, and never released, then it is not their final album, the one before it was their final album. Except all the compilations and live albums that will surely follow.

Don't worry lads I still got about 60 years left in this world if I play my cards right (which is kinda tough as I've been dealt a rather tricky hand the last year) and I'll pass the torch on to my daughter and hopefully a couple of other kids. They won't be able to miss all the good stuff The Stones brought to our little planet.

Jack Benny. W.C. Fields. George Burns and Gracie Allen. Fred and Adele Astaire. Bob Hope. Fanny Brice. Buster Keaton. Houdini. Remembered and revered? Books written about them? Every scrap of vintage film pored over? Okay. If that's their fate.

Very interesting proposition in that article about how the cultural explosion of the sixties only came to pass because the technology of records and tapes provided musicians with a source of income. Revenue from concerts only built on that if you think about it. It could also explain what happened to the music scene as technology advanced past selling physical records. If you ask me, that hints to a bleak future in terms of creativity.

some 15 years ago or so my mother went with a colleague to a Stones show. This colleague asked her before the show if Paul McCartney was still in the band (she wasn't joking!)
