She just passed. She played the neighbor Phyllis on the Mary Tyler Moore show and was in Young Frankenstein among other roles.

Watched her Oscar-winning performance in The Last Picture Show a few months ago.

Seeing it again almost 50 years later, it still resonates...and breaks your heart.

I can relate to your post. I saw The Last Picture Show at the cinema in Osaka city centre — I remember that was September, 1972, just after my school holidays. One Saturday afternoon on a hot and sweaty day. A deep, sad film that left me bleak in the end.

That was a double feature with the first-time revival of Easy Rider. Seemingly sitting on the opposite side from each other, two works gave a strange sense of relevance to this then teenager somehow. The Vietnam War was still going on.

I haven’t seen it since then.

Great film. And the book of same is a great read. Leachman’s character in it is steamy if I may say so.
