New Faces
(Mick Jagger / Keith Richards)

Windmill Lane Recording Studios, Dublin, Ireland,
November 3 - December 11, 1993 and Don Was’ Private Studio &
A&M Recording Studios, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, US,
January 15 - April 23, 1994

Mick Jagger - lead vocals, acoustic guitar
Keith Richards - acoustic guitar, harmony vocals
Charlie Watts - tambourine
Darryl Jones - bass
Chuck Leavell - harpsichord, harmonium
Frankie Gavin - pennywhistle
Luis Jardim - shaker

There's a new guy in town, he's been dragging around, he's the figure of youth
And his eyes are so blue and they're looking at you, so tell me the truth

Well, well, he's got stories to tell, he bites off more than he chews
Well, well, is he ringing your bell, my heart is breaking in two

And his skin is so fair and it shines like his hair, as he stands so aloof
With an indolent air and an insolent stare that just shutters the truth

Well, well, is he ringing your bell, my heart is breaking in two
Well, well, he'll be rotting in hell for playing the devil with you

Is it already too late, no point shutting the gate
Have you already swallowed the bait and you're gone

As he knocks you down cold, as you lose all control to this slip of a youth
I see fire in his eyes, I see ice in his smile and I'm learning the truth

Well, well, he's got stories to tell of love that is long overdue
Well, well, who is under his spell is paying the devil his due

Produced by Don Was & The Glimmer Twins

First released on:
The Rolling Stones - “Voodoo Lounge” 2LP
(Virgin Records V 2750) UK, July 11, 1994

It sounds like a Christmas carol to me. Sparkly.

Always liked this song. Kind of a kick-back to the sixties, maybe Lady Jane type sound? Wonder if Mick had someone in mind when writing this. Seems like a young guy tring to get in some girls pants. There's something unusual, ha-ha.

Too much Lady Jane and Angel In My Heart-sounding, imo.

Apart from that it's a nice little ballad.

I like the track from Voodoo Brew, where Keith's uses a zillion takes to nail that acoustic guitar solo. Priceless grinning smiley

Sweet little song that is most notable for displaying a rare sign of Jagger vulnerability.

Until now we'd had very few signs of Mick's softer side, Wild Horses and Fool To Cry spring to mind right now.

But here the old roue is admitting that his heart is breaking in two as his far younger rival is pulling away the girl of his fancy. Could it be about Carla Bruni I wonder? It's both shocking and touching that he's letting his guard down and mellowing with age.

Another misfire from the mostly-excellent Voodoo Lounge album. Like I said with Moon is Up, the Stones should be commended for trying new things, but this is a total dud.

I think it's a lovely song. Along with sweethearts together, it adds a sweet touch to VL.

The tune's got charm, something which is dearly missed in many latter day Stones ballads, imo.

mick's overly-affected vocal mannerisms ruined what might have a been a good little latter-day nugget....

It fits with the ancient pompous-sounding english Victorian feel of the tune, no?

Great vocal mannerisms. The last Stones song I remember that kinda gets in your throat emotionally. Instrumentally it is of course a cousin to Lady Jane. One of the very few great Post-Wyman Stones cuts.

It's a beautiful song. It's a nice departure from the pressure of being "the Stones" and reaching out, and as some have stated, reaching back at the same time.

This is a great song that stands on its own. It doesn't have to be a Rolling Stones song. It's a song that just happened to be written by the Rolling Stones.

A good 'un, Voodoo sure does have quite a lot of quality tunes on it.

Absolute favourites from it have always been Moon is Up, Love is Strong, The Worst, New Faces, Sparks Will Fly. The album coda of Baby Break it Down, Thru and Thru and Mean Disposition is pretty great too.

The sleazy groovy Brand New Car, You got me Rocking - Voodoo is well worth revisiting.
