Another one of my faves is ELlard "Moose" Boles, who played with Lou Reed's backing band (and took the occasional lead vocal on Lou's Holland-Dozier-Holland cover of "Keep Me Hangin' On"). Moose has played more recently with Wayne Kramer.

He's a giant black guy who always wore a cowboy hat and often played the bass like it was a regular guitar. Really aggressive, but also very sympathetic to his bandmates. There isn't a lot of footage available online of him, but I have some on DVD.

He now plays in his own blues band:

He's on Lou Reed's Growing Up In Public. An underrated album, in my opinion. The songs, especially the bass, are pretty damn heavy and rockin'. I heard Lou hates that record.

LOL, the minute I hear Boles' name the album I think of is "Growing up in Public". probably because he is in a pic on back, in his hat. I love Lou, but hate this album. The only one I really don't like. Boles is actually featured way more on "the Bells" - a very good album, and also mixed bass heavy. EB co wrote some of the best tunes on there too: "Families", "Disco Mystic". Cant recall if he was involved with title track too; anyway it features a strong bass hook.

While Jack Cassady still plays this 1970 clip demonstrates his superior bass skills.

At a about the 2:30 mark he really takes off in this 1970 Jefferson Airplane clip.

He's also on Take No Prisoners - his bass on that is outstanding as well with an EXPLOSIVE Street Hassle.
