OT: Bee Gees movie

Any love for the Bee Gees here, or are you all too tough to dig their harmonies and melodies?

I love a lot of their output, and maintain that Nights On Broadway is one of the best songs ever.

Anywho, is anyone getting excited to watch their new biography (discussed here , in the Guardian) ?

The Bee Gees are a guilty pleasure for me. Can't wait to see the film. I saw them on the "Spirits Having Flown" tour. They were great. Even the disco stuff holds up real well compared to what came after.

Always had a fondness for them.. even through the disco years winking smiley

Looking forward to catching the movie at some point.
Stumbled across what would count as their last performance the other day.

Their concert DVD, One Night Only,” recoded in Las Vegas is one of my very favorite concert videos!

Well I'll always love them because my first exposure to Massachusetts and that era's radio hits, were beautiful and incandescent.
They were produced extremely well and the harmonies had that amazing original brothers thing. That's a wild variable. It's real different music and approach and material but Kinks and Everlys come to mind.
Just in that intuitive almost genetic sense.
I totally admit that it's only pretty recently that the lyrics and honest street heat of Stayin Alive got to me. I was almost religiously against Most all Disco at first. I started going to bars in New Jersey where Mott The Hoople were in the juke box so....I was stubborn and shocked that my nice teenage boy ballad Masters h had gone to Alvin and The Chimpmunks.
Barry couldn't stop falsetto hiccuping and I was thinking bad thoughts.

But...
I vote YES

It's Australian Beach Boy Wilson family drama.
God that younger one. Uh... maybe not.

Damn good 60's hitmakers. Maurice was like Ringo... Sweet but sarcastic a bit..

I'm interested I guess.

One is capable of loving the Stones and the Bee Gees. It's not like the Stones themselves were actual tough guys. The Bee Gees are the American Beach Boys, in that you get that rare harmony that brothers have. Like the Everly Brothers, or the Louvin Brothers. Plus they had a great pop career, and then totally reinvented themselves for the disco era.

You can like Disco and Rock and Roll. Unless you're lacking.

Agree that "Nights On Broadway" and "One Night Only" are great.

Also love "To Love Somebody" and "Lonely Days", among many. "Emotion" with Samantha Sang is also very good.

Bee Gees are not only disco, the songs included in the Melody soundtrack are incredible good, "in the morning", "melody fair"," to love somebody".

Incredible songwriters until the end of the band.

"Jive Talking" is one of the few real turds they recorded.

The disco era Bee Gees are a guilty pleasure of mine as well but even if you're not a fan the documentary is excellent

Watched last night and it was great. I knew some stuff but the other was interesting. Amazing catalog they have. Feel bad for Maurice at the end of it. Worth the watch.

Bee Gees had hits way before Staying Alive. Such as Lonely Days [www.youtube.com] which became a single and reached the top 5 in the US peaking at #3 on the Billboard hot 100 . A big misconception that they were only a disco band .

Lots of good trivia in the documentary, i.e. :

Never knew they got a British record deal by sending a demo to Brian Epstein's company, NEMS.
Never new Robert Stigwood was a NEMS employee.
Never New RSO records stands for Robert Stigwood Organization.
Never knew they all relocated to Miami in the late 70's.
Never knew Maurice was married to Lulu.
Never knew Stigwood produced Saturday Night Fever.
Never Knew Barry was horribly dis-figured on his chest by a boiling water accident when he was 2 years old and didn't speak for 2 years afterward. (That was not in the doco btw)
Didn't know they had 20 number 1 singles in the U.S.
etc. , etc.

A very entertaining Doco.

(I'm in southern Europe, for what it's worth)

Thanks!

Like the early Bee Gees; hate the Disco Era.
Sorry I didn't attend Disco Demolition Night.
It was a very good documentary. Contained interesting clips and information (and nice clips of old Comiskey Park.)

So many good tunes, and a wide range of styles and genres ...seems they were always there on the radio when I was growing up in the '60's and '70's...
From 1970, this Beatles-esque tune which hit #3 on the Billboard charts in Jan, 1971:

And before they went full blown disco with Saturday Night Fever, there was a bit of funkiness with this Billboard #1 HIT in August, 1975.

And then this one from the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack - another #1 hit in March, 1978.

And so many other great tunes...again, seems they were always there.
The only cd I own from them is a double cd compilation of all the hits (and more), and it's a great one that spans most of their career.
Look forward to seeing this movie, and will have to dig out the cd compilation as it's been a long times since I've listened to it.

In the top ten music catalogues since 1950s

Who else do we have in there?

Beatles, Stones, Dylan, Abba, Bee Gees, Zeppelin, ELVIS, Michael Jackson/Jackson Five, David Bowie, Prince?

Is there a glaring omission? Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Billy Joel?

No reason not to like them, a lot of reasons to like them.

They weren't even close to a disco group in the 60's. In the Disco era I rate Nights on Broadway as one of their best singles.
