Let It Bleed
(Mick Jagger / Keith Richards)

Olympic Sound Studios, London, UK, March 9 & June 10 - July 2, 1969

Mick Jagger - lead vocals
Keith Richards - acoustic guitar, electric slide guitar, harmony vocals
Charlie Watts - drums
Bill Wyman - bass, autoharp
Ian Stewart - piano

Well, we all need someone we can lean on
And if you want it, well, you can lean on me
Yeah, we all need someone we can lean on
And if you want it, well, you can lean on me

She said: My breasts, they will always be open
Baby, you can rest your weary head right on me
And there will always be a space in my parking lot
When you need a little coke and sympathy

Yeah, we all need someone we can dream on
And if you want it, baby, well, you can dream on me
Yeah, we all need someone we can cream on
Yeah, and if you want to, well, you can cream on me

I was dreaming of a steel guitar engagement
When you drink my health in scented jasmine tea
But she knifed me in my dirty filthy basement
With that jaded faded junky nurse, oh, what pleasant company

Don’t we all need someone we can feed on
Yeah, and if you want it, well, you can feed on me, hey
Take my arm, take my leg, oh baby, don't you take my head

Yeah, we all need someone we can bleed on
Yeah, and if you want it, baby, well, you can bleed on me
Yeah, we all need someone we can bleed on
Yeah, yeah, and if you want it, baby, why don't you bleed on me, all over

Get it on rider, get it on rider, get it on rider, you can bleed all over me, yeah
Get it on rider, get it on rider, yeah, you can be my rider, you can come all over me
Get it on rider, baby, get it on rider, get it on rider, you can come all over me, yeah
Get it on rider, let it come all over me, yeah, yeah, get it on rider…

Produced by Jimmy Miller

First released on:
The Rolling Stones - “Let It Bleed” LP
(London NPS-4) US, November 29, 1969

Party party party fun!
This song shows us what Ian Stewart was all about.
I never thought they would capture the fun of the original in a live setting, but they managed
quite well on Stripped, with these glorious backing vocals by Keith.

This version misses the build up, but it still makes my tailfeathers shaking all over the place.

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

Oops - while I was posting it in the Tracking Cookie, marcovandereijk was posting it here... we both obviously have excellent taste!

One of a handful of songs around this period where the rhythm seems to take a few bars to "settle in" - Country Honk is another. When the rest of the band comes in after the acoustic guitar intro, the song goes in a different rhythmical direction from what I'd expected - and yet I think the guitar continues playing the same thing. Do others hear this, or is it just me?

Anyway, here's the Stripped version:

Classic Stones song, brilliant lyrics, brilliant arrangement - perfection!

Not just you. Let it bleed sounds like a blueprint for songs like YCAGWYW, Country Honk and maybe one more?

Great song. One of the first I learned to play on guitar.

Certainly a classic, like every track on the album that bears its name, but unfortunately (to my ears) the only flawed piece on this otherwise staggeringly brilliant LP.

The whole band has never sounded better, to my ears, than they do here and on the rest of the disc … so loose and so tight at the same time. Mick’s drawling vocal, Keith’s gorgeous, swampy guitars, Charlie’s supremely funky drumming, and of course the phenomenal production by Mr Jimmy.

What’s the flaw? IMO, this song overstays its welcome. After a fantastic intro (I adore how it takes a few bars for the rhythm to "settle in", as Green Lady says) and then the splendid first few verses and choruses, the song starts to lose its appeal, especially with the rather tedious “get it on rider” part. They should have faded it out after "oh baby don't you take my head", or at least after the next chorus. Less would have been worth more.

The cornerstone of the Let It Bleed album. It acts as a fulcrum to balance the incredible highs - Gimme Shelter, Midnight Rambler, Monkey Man and You Can't Always Get What You Want - with the earthy blues inspired songs - Live With Me, You Got The Silver etc

Objection, your honor. Please allow the prosecutor to listen again to the entire song, with
the volume way loud. If he doesn't dance during the last two minutes, he must be deaf!

Really, there is so much going on during this song. I can not imagine anyone wanting to cut it.

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

And that's the reason I skip this song and I love the song. Can't listen to it. Im not joking, it's like a piece of art that you just cant stand, it's good, and you know it and that's that. The get it on rider part is not bad but it's just like you say, it goes on and on, which is great but I cant listen to it anymore.

Bill Wyman played autoharp?

Too least favorites on that LP, the title track and "YCAGWYW" ...
I never liked the latter, the boys choir was very out of place for
them, especially then ... the former is too camp, tongue-in-cheek,
over the top ... yeah, they've got others that apply, such as "Star",
but that's a rocker, so that one's safe with me.

I like it for the lyrics and slide guitar, but Charlie's drumming has always annoyed me. Static and repetitive. Love the 81 versions though.

I just love this song, one of my very favorite, especially the lyrics
I remember reading someone's memories (I think it was Iggy Pop's), and he describes the first time he heard on the radio how Jagger sang
"Yeah, and if you want to, well, you can cream on me" - and his impressions of this

Did not care for Let It Bleed for many years. It seemed clunky and not on the level of the other brilliant songs on the album. But it's grown on me over the years and now I find myself grooving with it. Go figure.

Just the way I like my Stones, dirty and dripping with sexual innuendo....sex,drugs and rock-n-roll.

Yes, this song really gets all the checkmarks covered.

Stu shines here, I like Keith's slide but it gets a bit repetitive on the solo. The lyrics are great.

The weakest song on the album, and it's not even close.

A throwaway which rides on the coattails of the greatness of the surrounding numbers. Any affection for this song is not for the song itself, but for an era or for a time when the other songs reflected what was so great about the Stones.

The one steaming piece of shit on an album of otherwise shining gold nuggets.

Yeah - if that line was in Rough Justice everyone would be complaining about how crass the lyrics are these days.
