one of the few people mentioned in Bob Dylan songs (before 2020, of course):
I’m hearing Billy Joe Shaver
And I’m reading James Joyce
Some people they tell me
I got the blood of the land in my voice

Sad news indeed. One of the best songwriters to come out of Texas. He wrote the "Honky Tonk Heroes" album for Waylon Jennings along with a number of other songs that became what, I would say now for some, are Americana classics. The album he did with his son, Eddie, "Tramp On Your Street", is superb, one that I've listened to since it first came out. Can't say that for many albums. I've linked to it below. RIP, Billy Joe.

Yes, "Tramp On Your Street" belongs in everyone's record collection.

I saw Billy Joe and Eddie one night at a small bar in Macon. The band's van had broken down and it was just BJ on acoustic and Eddie on that old Strat that Dickie Betts had given him. We were at the front table and high fived and shook hands with them after every song - Billy Joe was missing a couple of fingers on his strumming hand! Both were in good humor and Eddie was one impressive player. Glad I got to see them.

Always liked this one (features his son on guitar who unfortunately has passed away too I believe of a heroin overdose):
