The one I regret the most is missing
the Jack Nitzsche conference Q&A session at
the Melbourne Film Festival August 2020 .....

Attended the Dub music session and the Jerry Humphrey
doco on the Saturday but skipped the Nitzsche session
thinking he'll be back again .... Two months later he was dead....

Keith mentioned once that after Charlie Watts
Nitzsche was the second most eccentric man he ever knew ...

Too many. Highlights:
Duke Ellington 1966
Led Zeppelin 1970 and 1977
Allman Brothers (with Duane) 1971
Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison same bill 1998
White Stripes 2005
Prince 1985 & 2005
Bruce 1978 (up through 1988)
Police 1982
Stones 1978 through 2013
Muddy Waters 1979
Little Richard (worked with him 1987)
CCR - 1969
Brian Wilson
Willie Nelson with a 20 piece orchestra Hollywood Bowl
Thunderbirds - winter 1979, bar in Bloomington, Indiana. The audience was me an one other person.

Regrets? Never saw Hendrix, Bowie, or any of the Beatles. (Except a glimpse of them at the Indiana State Fair 1964). Wish I'd seen Michael Bloomfield.

well I can tell you, based on your list, I used to see Cake at the Press Club and Old Ironsides on the regular back in the 80s when they were a local band of some renown. And a lot of other Sacramento bands who went on to some level of international success.

Then there was the whole punk rock scene at the Mabuhay Gardens in SF, right across the street from my one time home, the Stone. Some of my friends and my main weed dealer lived in the Vats, an old squat that was home to many of the local musicians in the day.

I been actively listening to music and attending live events, major and minor, for fifty years so I cannot even begin to make lists. I never got into the stadium rock thing so the vast majority have been small major venues or semi dive bar situations, and I have been mostly listening to reggae music since the late seventies so thats a whole other world.

The one I regret most never seeing has to be the Beatles. Would have loved to be at their last show at Candlestick Park, and it was a near possibility but didn't happen.

I am not so fond of live concerts and of those that I have seen, I am not going to list all of them, but only the ones I really enjoyed:

1) Rolling Stones. Many times. Most of them were good, sometimes great. The last time, Barcelona, 2007, was not so good, because Keith had not completely recovered.
2) Skatalites. Many times. Always great.
3) Toots and the Maytals. RIP Toots Hibbert. A wonderfully energetic performer. I have seen them 4 times and it was always fantastic.
4) Keith Richards, somewhere in the 90s, in Rotterdam. Good concert
5) Mitch Ryder. The 90s, Hamburg. Great great fun. Very good. One of the most enjoyable concerts I have ever seen.
6) Beastie Boys, the 90s, Hamburg. Great fun.
7) Bad Manners, in the 90s, Hamburg. Funny.

Some others which I still remember but were less great:
1) Tom Waits. In the 80s, Concertgebouw, Amsterdam. It was okay, but too "posh" environment. Tom Waits you want to see in a bar, not in a concert hall. Also, he should get rid of Marc Ribot and all those other avant-garde clowns.
2) Virgin Prunes. In the late 80s. They were not with Guggi anymore, so with only 1 singer instead of 2, they lost most of their wildness and crazy charm.
3) Motorhead, in the 2000s, Barcelona. Great for about half an hour, but then it gets boring.

Seen lots (too many to list), but never saw Jimi, the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Free, and would very much liked to have seen Queen (with Freddy).

Saw Springsteen at somebody's recommendation and because the opportunity presented itself. Wish I hadn't bothered quite frankly, it won't happen again ! Very glad I caught Tom Petty at Hyde Park, the poor man died soon afterwards.

I got to see BB King! ... Probably about a year before he died.
I saw Willie Nelson too, for the first time, also a couple years ago. I am so glad I get to see both of these legends!

Regrets ... I never saw The Clash!

I don't know about the concerts I missed, but I can list the ones of any importance that I attended as follows:

1. The Rolling Stones: Moby Gym Arena, Fort Collins Colo, 11-7-1969
-- The Rolling Stones: Denver Coliseum, Denver Colo, 6-16-1972
-- The Rolling Stones: Cotton Bowl, Dallas Texas, 7-6-1975
-- The Rolling Stones: Kennedy Stadium, Philadelphia PA, 9-26-1981
2. Muddy Waters: The Stanhope House, Stanhope NJ, 3-25-1981
3. Grateful Dead: Berkeley Community Theatre, Berkeley CA, 8-14-1971
-- Grateful Dead: Boulder Colorado, Summer of 1970
4. Bruce Springsteen: Madison Square Garden, NYC, 8-21-1978
-- Bruce Springsteen: Madison Sqiare Garden, NYC, 11-28-1980
5. Johnny Cash: Moby Gym Arena, Fort Collins Colorado, 5-13-1970
6. Willie Nelson: Huguenot NY, date unknown 1997 to 1999
7. Johnny Winter: Central Park, NYC, 7-27-1980
-- Johnny Winter: Pier 84, Manhattan NY, 8-19-1981
8. Stevie Ray Vaughan: The Chance, Poughkeepsie NY, 4-28-1984
9. Jefferson Airplane: Boulder Colorado, Spring of 1970
10. The Who: Madison Square Garden, NYC, 6-16-1979
11. Stevie Wonder: Denver Coliseum, Denver Colorado, 6-16-1972
12. Leon Russel: Huguenot, NY, date unknown 1997 to 1999

Note that I am skipping literally 100s of concerts of little importance, and listing the ones above proved to be a daunting task.

There’s a lot I’ve forgotten, festivals and gigs in general between 94 and the early 2000s were drunken affairs.

The bands I didn’t and would kill to have seen were The Doors and Nirvana. I did have tickets for the Dublin Nirvana gig in 94, but that didn’t go ahead Obviously. Weirdly it was scheduled for the day his body was found. (Though it had already been rescheduled from the date)

The Doors I’d love to have seen. Manzareks playing, Densmores drumming, kriegers playing and tone and Morrison’s voice were brilliant live (when on form, they could also be a disaster, but that’s a lot of bands)

Listening to the Doors set from say Detroit in 70, or any of the live albums they put out (way less edits that Rothschild claimed, the bright midnight release have made the complete shows available) they just tore the place up. I have never heard music that so suits the drunken state as the Doors live.

And another 101 artists I love and didn’t see, that list would be looooooong... grinning smiley

Ozzy Osbourne
Elvis Costello

Jimmy Buffett
U2

Regret not seeing:

Dang, DaveG.
Very, very, impressive.

Proud to say I was at at lease two of the same ones you were at winking smiley

(also, may have asked at the Lisa show, but where did you see Jimi & The Beatles? Seattle?? Sicks Stadium for Jimi by chance?
Great list.

Hey Mike, the Lisa show was lots of fun, especially when she reached down and put her hand on each of us during a song! I’m sure her flirtatiousness was genuine!

I saw The Beatles at Dodger Stadium, August 1966.

As for Jimi, I saw him at Newport ‘69, a 3-day festival in June of 1969, Devonshire Downs, Northridge, California. In fact, the performance I saw is on YouTube and was filmed from right near where I was standing. It was a jam, with Buddy Miles and others.

Hope you’re doing well!

Dave your list is extremely impressive & the only one to feature The Beatles, The Stones, Led Zep, The Kinks & Hendrix. (that's 4 of my top 6 favorites all-time) You're so lucky!

I did notice that the following bands were absent: The Who, Yes, The Doors, Rush, Van Halen etc. If you don't mind me asking, did none of those bands appeal to you or just not appeal enough to go see them and/or other reasons?

(3hrs.45min.) Jimi Hendrix- GYPSY SUN & RAINBOWS - Woodstock Festival rehearsals

I couldn't list all the artists I have seen but listing the ones I wanted to or should have attended (and regret missing) is easier.

Led Zeppelin - had tickets to US tour (Pittsburgh and Buffalo) before Bonham died and could have done reunion show but would have had to fly to London, go to show and fly home. Waited for US tour that didn't happen.

Bob Marley & the Wailers - His second to last show was in Boston but we were sitting in the dorm and said we will go next time.

Cream reunion - Couldn't swing it with work schedule.

Stevie Ray Vaughan

Deep Purple

Yes

REM

Talking Heads

Buffalo Springfield

Simon and Garfunkel (Have seen both but not together)

Thanks, Kevin. Yes, I was very fortunate to see so many of the greats. Living in L.A. back then afforded many opportunities.

As for the bands you mentioned: I was never much interested in seeing Yes, Rush, or The Who. I can’t explain why, but they just never appealed to me. Van Halen came along after my concert-going lifestyle, though I thought they were all right.
As for the Doors: I went to see them at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in 1969. I really liked The Doors and was excited to see them. After the opening act, The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, I believe it was Ray Manzarek who came out and informed us that Jim Morrison was under the weather and not able to perform. He then introduced their replacement for the show: The Fifth Dimension! Talk about a letdown! So, I never was able to see The Doors.

well I can tell you, based on your list, I used to see Cake at the Press Club and Old Ironsides on the regular back in the 80s when they were a local band of some renown.

Re: "the vast majority have been small major venues or semi dive bar situations"...I feel like these types of shows are overlooked & often more intimate, possibly even better than the 50K people stadium shows.

Re: "I have been mostly listening to reggae music since the late seventies"...I have Bob Marley's 4CD boxset & Legend (G.Hits) & will likely DL his studio LPs one of these days...what other reggae artists do you recommend?

Thanks for the feedback & I'm glad you got to experience all the music, memories & good times!
