Let’s Spend The Night Together
(Mick Jagger / Keith Richards)

RCA Studios, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, US, August 3 - 11, 1966 and
Pye Studios & Olympic Sound Studios, London, UK, November 8 - 26, 1966

Mick Jagger - lead vocals, backing vocals
Keith Richards - electric guitar, bass, piano, backing vocals
Charlie Watts - drums
Brian Jones - organ
Jack Nitzsche - piano

My, my, my, my
Don't you worry 'bout what's on your mind, oh my
I'm in no hurry, I can take my time, oh my
I'm going red and my tounge's getting tied
I'm off my head and my mouth's getting dry
I'm high, but I try, try, try, oh my
Let's spend the night together, now I need you more than ever
Let's spend the night together now

I feel so strong that I can't disguise, oh my
But I just can't apologize, oh no
Don't hang me up and let me down
We could have fun just groovin' around, around, around
Let's spend the night together, now I need you more than ever
Let's spend the night together
Let's spend the night together, now I need you more than ever
You know I'm smiling, baby, you need some guiding, baby
I'm just deciding, baby, now I need you more than ever
Let's spend the night together, let's spend the night together now

This doesn't happen to me ev'ry day, oh my
No excuses offered anyway, oh my
I'll satisfy your every need
And now I know you will satisfy me
Let's spend the night together, now I need you more than ever
Let's spend the night together now
And now I need you, need you more than ever, oh my
I’ll satisfy your every need, oh my my
And now I know, I know you’ll satisfy me, oh my my
I beg you baby, oh my my my my my my
Come on now, oh my my my…

Produced by Andrew Loog Oldham

First released on:
The Rolling Stones -
“Let’s Spend The Night Together / Ruby Tuesday” 7” single
(Decca F 12546) UK, January 13, 1967

More ground breaking that it sometimes gets credit for.

While
The good boys wanted to "hold your hand",
The bad boys wanted to "spend the night".

Love the song dearly but it was a surprising move back into pop territory rather then pursuing the amazing trailblazing 'now' sounds of Have You Seen Your Mother Baby and Paint It Black. Never thought I'd ever see it live and then, bang, at Knebworth, it appeared out of nowhere. Let's spend some time together indeed!

Love the original and love the Still Life version more. I agree, this was a ground breaking recording and shocked the prissy English authorities. I notice Rene has stated both Keith and Brian on piano. Keith has always said it was his piano riff on this, so I assumed it was him you could hear as the main piano. Could it have actually been Brian?

It is a little mystery. I've always assumed that if Ian, Stu och Nicky wasn't involved Brian was the one on piano.

In general, I'm not a fan of this poppy period of the Stones, but this track is so irresistible and vibrant -- thanks in large part to Charlie's drumming -- that all my resistance simply melts away. Wonderful stuff.

Bloody hell at this rate, someone is going to come on here and say it was Charlie playing it with his feet while he drummed. I love a mystery but not when it can't be solved! Do we believe Mr Richards' assertation that he wrote the piano riff and he played it?

irresistible is right - it isn't even relevant whether one likes it or not:
it's a genuine gem of songwriting. like the crown jewels, it's beyond liking/not liking

and in case it adds to the general Keyboard Mystery: Keith has said it's one of the first numbers he wrote on piano

the TotP performance charms me totally - Keith lookin like a warm sleepy mammal that hasn't quite woken up
and Bill smiling when Mick adds "oh no i won't"

not to mention the infamous Sullivan performance, with Keith dancing so pretty
and his backing vocals chiming out the wrong words just like ringin a bell

i love the Rolling Stones

ps: someone around here once quite aptly noted that the "now" in the refrain is quite goofy,
akin to saying "let's do something together tomorrow now!" :E but i forgive them

Yes, it really comes alive, live. All kinds of interesting covers out there, too.

Even those of us who are not really "into" pop songs, have to admit that there is nothing wrong
with this beauty.
"We could have fun just groovin' around, around, around!"

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

Perfect song for the Stones. Completely accessible to the masses but about as sexually suggestive as you could get.

If you pay Keno a dollar for every mistake he's made he'd be a millionair.

Mick is very convincing in this song.
I'm going red and my tounge's getting tied
I'm off my head and my mouth's getting dry

It is evident that he knows what he's talking about

I read somewhere that prior to a tour of China the Stones had to promise that they wouldn't play this "lewd" song ...

It seems the Chinese were afraid that teenagers would take this as an invitation to making babies after the concerts ...

But I'm not sure whether that was a kind of hoax. Anyone here know more about this ?

A fantastic gem, they were catching up with The Beatles during this period.

But it's something the Beatles could have never pulled off. Even at that stage they couldn't have been as explicit, or expressed it as suggestively.

A great studio track never matched by any live version.

This track has always been a personal favourite. Although it's "pop" I always felt that it had a certain rock n roll drive and sexiness about it regardless of the subject matter.

I never knew that Bill didn't play bass on the studio version though!

At this moment, I don't think ANY other song would have done the job:

The only song where a lyric had me realy curiously confused. As a young teen the line "I'll satisfy your every need", what the hell were her needs? So I researched the topic heavily through my teens and perfected it in later years.

Actualy a pretty provocative lyric for it's day.

They didn't have to. They were The Beatles.

Maybe so, but several other sources also credit Nitzsche on this track, including Zentgraf...
