To me the first real Stones album is Beggar's Banquet. I don't care much about the albums made before that (or after Tattoo You). Maybe it's an age thing, I don't know. In those days singles were the main thing and they made some great singles before 1968: Satisfaction, Play With Fire, Get Off My Cloud, Paint It Black, Ruby Tuesday, Let's Spend The Night Together. On the albums however they sound like a mix of a blues epigon band and a pop band. Their first consummate LP was BB. But that's just my opinion...

I agree! The earlier albums certainly contained gems, but they were evolving as they went. By the time of BB, they had found themselves (JJF was the PROOF!) and released a cohesive album that shows the Stones having pretty much evolved into the Stones many of us have loved ever since. Each of the Big Four albums has a sound and vibe unique unto themselves. They were all about making albums that needed to be listened to as a whole rather han just collections of songs. By Exile they had truly become an entity unto themselves. Also, just my opinion...

Well, that makes some sense to the degree that singles were really more important than albums before 1967 or so.

So we can agree to disagree.
I say the U.S. version is tighter and better sequenced.

The great thing about the early albums IMHO is the experimental sides in both song writing and the arrangements. Mick and Keith tried so many different styles and were very good at it. Brian was a musical swiss army knife with that always added something interesting soundwise that made the songs stand out from the rest of the competition. Although Beggars is my favorite album by the Stones I don't care much for what came after it. There are good songs of course! They found a formula that worked and stayed with it and that is understandable. But I miss their experimental side too much to really bother.

But don't see me claiming here which is 'right' version. There is none.

I would rather say both...

It's a great album: it's influence on Britpop is amazing. It also influenced Elvis Costello on This Year's Model.
However, it did cause the Stones to wonder down the blind alleys that were Between The Buttons and Satanic Majesties.
