Best Bootleg from the 1972 Tour
Date: June 23, 2007 22:20

I think there are several audience recordings from this tour out there but I'd like to know which is the best bootleg. I'm mainly interested in soudboard recordings from that tour. Are there any soundboard recordings worth looking for apart from the "Welcome To The Jungle" boot?

Touring Party - 6 CDs in mostly soundboard quality is superb.

Yes that's a terrific box, it's 7CDs - and not too expensive either
Ladies & Gentlemen soundtrack and the audience recording from Charlotte 72 are also up there

"Philadelphia Special"
"Ft. Worth Express"
the soundtrack to Ladies and Gentlemen: The Rolling Stones
"Keep Your Motor Running"- the Lost '72 Live Album

......those are all great. There are various box sets compiling the soundboard material from both Ft. Worth shows on 6/24/72,and the Philly soundboard material from 7/20 and 7/21/72. Pittsburgh 7/22/72 is also available as a rough soundboard.

The Touring Party box set (I think it has all the Ft. Worth, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and New York soundboard material) is the best and most comprehensive.

There is even a better one, the 8 CD collection "Work Sucks, Let´s Go On Tour".
Compiled by a fan from Undercover who fixed errors, added missing songs etx.
Absolutely outstanding.

You must specify soundboard or audience.

Akron is audience.

Pittsburg (speed corrected) is best soundboard.

My personal favourite is Charlotte '72

The most famous soundboards are from Fort Worth, Philly and one of the NYC shows. They're all good performances and very good sound quality. Some releases have overdubs (e.g. a fabulous Tumbling Dice background vocal by Keith) as they were intended for official release (freakin' pity it never happened). Pittsburgh is less good both in terms of sound quality and performance (kind of bland).

Of the audience recordings, Charlotte is probably the best combination of excellent quality and a mindblowing performance. Norfolk, Hollywood Palladium and Mobile also rank right beside it. It all depends on who you ask. Great performances with lesser sound quality include the Boston shows, the rest of the NYC shows, Long Beach, and Knoxville. Vancouver is great for a more experimental setlist.

"It's great to be back in Pittsburgh - we haven't played here since 1956"
Pittsburgh is a top-notch show IMO, it's just below the 4 titles I mentioned,
the best audience recordings, also IMO, are the 3 first shows of July 1972, Norfolk and Charlotte is circulating in better quality than the CD versions - but to my knowledge, the VGP release is the best source for Washington DC.

Pittsburgh is a pretty forgettable performance IMO. Sound quality is also rather poor for a soundboard.

Just get the 7CD Rattlesnake box and the "Ladies & Gentlemen" soundtrack ("You Can´t Do That Baby" (VGP), etc...) and you´ll have everything you need.

Yes the quality leaves a bit to be desired. Wonder how soundboards in that muddy quality roots from....? One would think the sound was great to start with, so where did the degrading happen? I've always wondered about that.

You can't, it's out of stock - and besides, noone want to share such info - it's private, and illegal
"Undercover" is a CDR tree not a commercial bootleg-company.

The Pittsburgh soundboard is notable for the almost complete separation of the guitars in the left and right channels. It is perfect for you guitar players who want to tune out Taylor and play along with Keith; or vice versa. I also call this recording "Stones 101" because it is so instructional about what each guitar is playing.

There are so many variations boot-wise for the Philly and Ft. Worth songs, but you got it right...the STP or "Work Sucks..." box sets cover the best of it. I also second the recommendations for the Charlotte audience recording. And, of course, the L&G soundtrack and DVD is a must. I can quibble about that movie and the performance, but it is still the band in '72 and its the best we have.

After that there are many recordings worth the listen, but start there and see how much more you want to hear.

Erik, is the version of Charlotte '72 from the master tape that's on the RO tracker the superior version you're speaking of??

About the Pittsburgh recordings sound quality, I figure it sounded really good in the beginning but was copied and recopied many times and the tape that was finally committed to vinyl was a really high generation. I would think that some people out there had better sounding versions of this show, and if they still exist, I hope they surface someday.

Yes that's the basic rule for degrading, what I meant was
it surely must have been copied a lot of times to get to the quality that's circulating on CD, therefor it must be a lot of better quality tapes out there somewhere,
so it would be interesting to know the exact story behind the exact tapes,
....of course that's impossible

If it's the same as the one from last year, then - yes

Today for me it's Ladies and Gentlmen The Rolling Stones.

35th anniversary (today and tomorrow) of the Houston and Dallas shows that became the best rock and roll concert film ever.

Happy b-day ladies and gents!

The afternoon show in Fort Worth is the worst show of the tour. They barnstorm onto the stage, Mick at this point opens up his energy coffers and drinks in all that adulation. Except at this show, Keith had to stop everything before they started, and tune his guitar. And tune. And tune. And tune. The momentum was completely lost. Add to that Mick got laryngitis during "Rocks Off." The best thing about this show was that they played "Sweet Black Angel," and did a sensational job.

And here he is, staggering through "Midnight Rambler," no doubt thinking of the box office receipts and how he coulda just stayed at the LSE, for all the fun he's having today!

Is there a recording of the full show with Stevie Wonder's full set included anywhere?

Re: Best Bootleg from the 1972 Tour

I haven't heard a really good QUALITY boot from Charlotte '72. Which one do I need? I agree w/ Mathijs that the Stones really hit their stride right in that mid section, from Houston to Detroit. So many top performances, but none in outstanding quality.
I really should get one of those Box Sets.

And I truly apologize for repeating myself here again and again, and it is slightly OT - but Australia '73, which is almost the same setlist, and definitely the same vibe as '72 , is IMO still the very best. Performance and Sound Quality.

I would extend that to Toronto! A triple winner imo (yes in bad aud quality).

Hopefully when the "Exile On Main St" 50th Anniversary box set comes out in a few years they will include a few live shows from the 1972/73 tour. Especially the ones that were already overdubbed and mixed for the "lost" live album.

The soundboard from Pittsburg - Royal Dragon - The guitars are awesome and you can easily pick out Keith and Taylor - upfront

For performances I always go back to Charlotte, Mobile and Seattle.

But the Rattlesnake box is what everyone needs. It's fantastic.
