Laugh, I Nearly Died
(Mick Jagger / Keith Richards)

La Fourchette, Pocé sur Cisse, France & St. Vincent, West Indies,
June - September 2004, La Fourchette, Pocé sur Cisse, France,
November - December 2004, March 7 - 9 & March 14 - June 2005 and
Henson Studios, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, US, June 6 - 28, 2005

Mick Jagger - vocals, electric guitar, keyboards, percussion
Keith Richards - electric guitar
Charlie Watts - drums
Darryl Jones - bass

And I've been travelling, but I don't know where
I've been missing you, but you just don't care
And I've been wandering, I've seen Greece and Rome
Lost in the wilderness, so far from home, yeah, yeah

I've been to Africa, looking for my soul
And I feel like an actor looking for a role
I've been in Arabia, I've seen a million stars
Been sipping champagne on the boulevards, yes
I'm so sick and tired, trying to turn the tide, yeah
So I'll say my goodbyes, laugh, laugh, I nearly died

I’ve been out in India, but it froze my bones
I'm living for the city, but I'm all alone
But I've been travelling, but I don't know where
And I've been wandering, but I just don't care , baby no
I hate to be denied, how you hurt my pride, yeah
I’ve been pushed aside, but laugh, laugh, laugh, I nearly died

Been travelling far and wide, wonder who's gonna be my guide
Been travelling far and wide, wonder who's gonna be my guide

I’m living in a fantasy, but it's way too far
But this kind of loneliness is way too hard
I've been wandering, feeling all alone
I lost my direction and I lost my home, well
I'm so sick and tired, yeah, now I'm on the slide
Feeling so despised, when you laugh, laugh, I almost died

Been travelling far and wide, wonder who's gonna be my guide…

Produced by Don Was & The Glimmer Twins

First released on:
The Rolling Stones - “A Bigger Bang” CD
(Virgin Records / EMI TOCP 66440) Japan, August 31, 2005

To show the world they still had more creativity in their ageing bodies than many musicians
half their age.

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

Great song, but a bit sloppy recorded, imo, especially the guitars.

Pure Gold

Very fine number; brilliant
The vocal arrangment at hte end of the song is pure gold
Effective interaction between both guitars with so simple licks and arrangment

One of the finest moments from the post-80s period

Just for this song (among others) is worth the BB album; just for one song similar to this will make a new album worth

It is Jagger's with a very KR atmosphere (even if the main guitar is MJ), and a very soul atmosphere at the end

Great song, that would have been classic if they had produced it in analog.

A rock star’s lament; one of the most brilliant pieces of music the Stones have recorded in a long, long time. Charlie’s spare intro, hypnotic and entrancing, then that sultry, mesmerizing guitar riff, dark as night, and then Mick’s stunning vocal performance, as he pours his soul out in a desperate effort to exorcise an anguish and a loneliness that knows no limits. The lyrics, poetic and cutting, evoking distant lands that offer no solace or respite from the pain.

And that spare, gorgeous arrangement ... this is music that really breathes, flowing with an ease and confidence that evokes the Stones at their creative peak. And yet, in its uniqueness, LIND transcends anything they have ever done. Completely unlike the sophomoric filler tracks that hobble ABB, this is mature and heartfelt songwriting of the highest order.

Wish they would do more like this.

A solid album track from the ABB sessions during which Ron Wood spent his time not at the studio but in a rehab clinic and only overdubbed his parts later, "laughinearlydied", as the song is called on the CD sleeve, is a good showcase of what Mick Jagger, the songwriter, is capable of.

In my household, this song has received fairly many plays early on when the album was new but less so in recent years when compared to other tracks from ABB.

A solid album track, no more and no less. I guess I must pull out the CD now and turn up the system to this song.

This is an outstanding track proving that they had something left. If it was on Exile everyone would be raving how great it is!

Jagger's vocal is very good on this song. There is something missing from the instrumental . . just kind of boring. Where is the Stones' magic

my favorite one on BB. And maybe the only one eye rolling smiley
Great guitar style (not a necessity to play thousands a minute to get a good result/feeling). I thought it was Ronnie but ... yes it was not drinking around Pocé (vins de Loire..)
It reminds me the Down in hole or Heaven style I love

It's missing Bill to plug in all the little holes and play just that right note. It's really not a bad song.

what he said.

when i first heard this song i realized 2 things-one is that when they try this song is the quality you get.the second thing was that its very ,very easy to tell when they're not trying.

if they stayed in the studio and worked at it we could have had years of songs of this quality.however,it is good to know the skill and talent are still there, the drive and will may be a different story.

Does Mick shoutmumble the word "Bubba!" at one point during this song. That's what I always hear. Just me?

the song is a major one and a few people realize that sad smiley
It has great guitars with lots of few little things making the play special with a nice echo, choirs, great percussions.

This one is clearly A MUST.
