This thread is just "Slave best since 1980" continuation.

Rocker: "Let Me Go" (Studio version), runner up: "Too Tight".

Ballad: "Almost Hear You Sigh".

Blues: "Fancy Man Blues". If the deluxe of Some girls is in: "Keep Up Blues" (although the original from the Some Girls sessions with the barking, growling Jagger is even better).

Country: - If deluxe of Some Girls is in: "You Win Again".

Come On
Everything released since 1986 is better...thumbs up
and before ...

So why do you think this is the poorest Stones song ever?

I was exaggerating. I still think it's highly over-rated by folks on this board. Simply its not that great. Many other ballads trump it, from 1989+, as far as I'm concerned ......... Blinded By Love, Out Of Tears, Blinded By Rainbows, Already Over Me, and I'd throw in a couple Keith ballads that trump it as well.

Worst stones songs basically are what's on Dirty Work ... and Goin' Home.

Pretty much all of TY was fantastic. After that, I would say " Love Is Strong".
It should have been a big hit...great video and very good guitars.

I love it but to suggest it's the best on Tattoo is way off the meek for me let alone since 1980.

Start me up
Waiting on a friend
No use in crying
Tie you up
New faces
Out of tears
One hit
Mixed emotions
Continental drift
Thief in the night
The worst
Saint of me
Laugh I nearly died
She was hot
Biggest mistake
Oh no not you again
Look what the cat dragged in
You got me rocking
Anybody seen my baby
Gunface

and a heap more are better in my opinion.
It's still a ball tearer of of track though smoking smiley

You made me wince...and your 'ball tearer' comment was also cringeworthy.

I noticed the reference to Slave on the Americans and this reminded me of the ball tearer observation

It's not even their best song of 1981...

Slave is one of their lesser songs since 1980, i tend to skip that one. It goes on a bit but its got a nice groove.

Almost Hear You sigh is ok but nothing too memorable about it.

Please this is my personal view don't take it to heart anyone.

I would say It Won't Take Long and Out Of Control are better.

It's one of their top tier-jams from before 1976.

"Slave", yes fantastic, although there are is least one other fantastic riff-based song since 1980: "Tie You Up (Pain Of Love)". And maybe "One Hit".

"Almost Hear You Sigh" is a good pop song, but I don't enjoy it much. Good craftmanship but it doesn't move me.

As "It Must B Hell" is to "Soul Survivor" I have always seen "Slave" to "Hey Negrita".
I do love the video footage from somewhere, of the band jamming on "Slave" and Jagger directing the cowbell lick to someone.

To me YES , and it's a damn shame that I will never get to hear the glimmers perform this one .

OK...I can see the comparison, but while It Must Be Hell is obviously inferior to it's predecessor, how do you think Slave compares to Hey Negrita?

"Start Me Up" is of course the undisputed winner here. Released in 1981. Slave is a great jam session though.

Slave and Black Limousine were initially my favorites at the time Tattoo You was released.
I still like them both better than Start Me Up, but prefer to listen to the album as a whole, and favorite tracks change all the time.
At this very moment, Ain't No Use in Crying is my favorite from Tattoo You.

And yes, Tattoo You is the last truly great album from the Stones IMO.
After 35+ years you'd think there might be something that's as good or better - but sadly not the case.

Put me down for "Almost Hear You Sigh" which happens to be a "Talk Is Cheap"
leftover.

I would say It Won't Take Long and Out Of Control are better.

I think It Won't Take Long is amongst their very best songs ever. It's brilliant.

Yeah. It Won't Take Long is the Brown Sugar or Start Me Up of 2005, or should have been. At least it should have been the 3rd single instead of the lame Biggest Mistake which sounds like James Blunt was involved.

Mandu,

I agree..."Worried About You" is one of the best followed by "Tops" and "Almost Hear You Sigh"...

But We Can't disagree with the Global Response to "Start Me Up" which makes
it the best Stones song since 1980.

You can disagree whether it's the best song...but it sure is the best single. that single sold the album, which a great single should do.

That's been one of the problems with the album release formula for this band since then...lack of a truly killer single. Much as I loved UOTN as a single, it just didn't have the broad appeal. After that it's been stones by numbers, Don't Stop, High Wire, SOL, ABSMB, Love Is Strong. Nothing remarkable about these cuts.

That video sold the Stones! I was 15 in 1981, already collecting their back catalog, but that video put a current face on it. That and Waiting For A Friend. There's something to be said for "personality" -- and yes, all five of them at the time.

Is Slave the best song since 1980? Well, one of the best released since 1980.

But of the best written and recorded since 1980? That's another question! And, frankly, I don't think you'll get many answers, at least not from here...
