For those who remember Tell Laura I Love Her, "The first Welshman to have a solo UK number one dies."

Oh my, hate to speak ill of the dead, but Tell Laura I Love Her, oh sweet jeezus, what a maudlin song to become a popular teen ballad, right up there with Last Kiss by J. Frank Wilson and the Cavaliers. This is probably a theme for a new thread. Re Mister Valance, RIP, sir, no offense meant.

There were a lot of great death songs from that period, I have to admit, and into the 60s. My favorites were Terry by Twinkle and Leader of the Pack by the Shangri-Las. But Tell Laura I Love Her was a good 'un.

^^ Dead Man's Curve probably wins the irony stakes, considering what happened to Jan not long afterwards.

How come Tell Laura I Love Her is by Ray Petersen and not Ricky Valance on that compilation Rockman? Was that a cover? Did Ricky Valance do the original?

Just looked it up, turns out Ricky Valance had a hit in the UK charts with a cover of the Ray Peterson USA hit. Actually written by two other authors, I probably am not familiar with the Valance version.

I was wondering why the name Ricky Valance was not familiar; I knew the version by Ray Peterson here in the states.
