The Rolling Stones All the Songs: The Story Behind Every Track

My wife wants to get me something for my birthday. She asked me to choose. I was thinking about this book. What do you all think? The author is Philippe Margotin.

Yes, I got it for cheap, considering it's a big, heavy hardback. There are a few missing songs. Not sure why. But most are here, and most have pretty good little back stories on who played what. And the author is quite savvy when it comes to Bill, and his contribution to each song.

It has its flaws, but I enjoy it nevertheless. Looks good and massive in the shelf!

The verses about the 20.000 grandmas has always struck a note with me, and is so appropriate for these days. That was pretty much the first lyrics I memorized off this album.

PS: missing the song Cosmic Christmas, that's pretty funny.

Yes I realize sped up its wish you a merry Christmas, its just funny to see it mentioned. And I understand there is an interesting story behind it.

What the hell is a methylated sandwich?

Common for tramps to consume
mentholated spirits by dipping it in bread .....

At the camp of a work site I was living at
one of the old guys use to heat up tins of
shoe polish and dip bread in it to get the alcohol ....

I'm going to guess a street way of saying an extremely healthy sandwich.

I think Keith was right when he described Jigsaw Puzzle as being "a little long".
For me it's always been the weak link on Beggars, and the fact it was the last tune on side one made it easy to lift the needle before it was over.
Musically pretty good, but lyrically and vocally seems forced - might have been better as an instrumental.

Here's how journalist Richie Unterberger summed up the lyrics:

"... the similarity to some of Dylan's long, wordy surreal songs of the mid-'60s is close enough that it's a little surprising "Jigsaw Puzzle" hasn't been singled out
by more listeners as being a Dylan imitation, particularly since it frankly sounds a little hackneyed in its approximation of Dylanesque weirdness".

In other words, a pale imitation, but contrary to what Unterberger says, seems most people do acknowledge the faux/subpar Dylanesque lyrics.

I like the wigged outness of Jigsaw Puzzle. So it's a bit Dylany... if they'd held onto it and released Monkey Man as a single, Jigsaw would've made a fantastic B-side and everyone would say 'Why didn't they release it'.

I don't think its a bit weird and I think it rates right up there with the Stones greatest songs. Its deep and its intellectual, maybe that's the problem, and I think the lyrics are brilliant, it depicts the alienation of people so well, so much better than most of Dylans post-blonde-on-blonde schtick.

And as usual Mr Rockman has it right on the methelated sandwich, its referring to tramp culture. Certainly NOT a healthy sandwich...I wonder how anyone even figures that given the context and picture painted by the other lyrics.

I saw somewhere that it, if it's the correct word, had to do with a high load of vitamins but a good bit of other definitions talk about something to do with alcohol in a high content.

This spirit ("unmineralized methylated spirit") consisted of 90 parts of alcohol of 60-66 over-proof (9 1 -95% of pure alcohol) and 0 parts of wood-naphtha.

Thank you. I have never heard that reference, or anybody doing that, here in the States. Not that people down on their luck don't do it here, but I've never heard of the practice.

Here in the states it had more to do with drinking Sterno and wood grain alcohol (will make you permanently blind quick). None of this is recommended or good for you but its a cheap high I guess.

Lycircally, it seems like they were trying to be like Dylan, but I don't think the sound of Jigsaw Puzzle is like Blonde On Blonde. Whose Driving Your Plane on the other hand has that kind of sound to me.

Yes the great blues man
Tommy Johnson was a heavy Sterno drinker

So much so that he wrote and recorded Canned Heat Blues ..... Memphis 1928

yep canned heat = Sterno. and of course the band took its name from the song quite likely if not from the product.

I don't know if it does or not, but that sure sounds like David Sanborn, who played on Pretty Beat Up. His shrill tone is recognizable. I'm not a fan of it.

.....no not really ....

Charlie establishes a subtle groove that
is simple sounding but highly effective.
He is accompanied on bass by Bill whose
playing is equally precise and solid ......
