Interesting listen, IMHO. Smith is a player I have come to appreciate better over time. I could do without all the f bombs at the start of the podcast.

I always wondered the attraction of this guy. I guess he is a good technician and studio musician but his time leading a band on tv shows never really impressed me. Perhaps it was the forced format though, he could be a genius who was stifled by the requirements of the medium.

Yup indeed! Smith's "work" (the generic meandering soloing) as a sideman for Dylan is a heavy burden on these golden 1988-90 live years. JJ Jackson was a lot better.

Basically there are two types of artists worth interviewing : the ones who did great things and the ones who didn't do great things but who met great people.

G.E. Smith definitely belongs to the 2nd category.
