OT: The Beach Boys and Mike Love
Posted by: drewmaster ()

Although the Stones will be always be my lifeblood, I love many other groups, including the original Beach Boys. I have been doing a lot of reading about them recently, and I've realized what a talentless low-life Mike Love is (in my opinion, and that of many others, too). He is responsible not only for creating some of the worst music I've ever heard ("Kokomo" and many other songs that have nothing to do with Brian Wilson), but he has repeatedly sued Brian Wilson and he brazenly uses the name "the Beach Boys" for a group that includes no original members besides himself.

What a jerk. He is the complete opposite of the joy and beauty that the rest of the Beach Boys brought to the world.

Agree with all Drew said.

The ironic thing is that Mike Love is very friendly towards fans. I've had him sign multiple albums for me and got a photo with him and he was as friendly as one could hope for under those circumstances.

The Beach Boys took a direct hit when Dennis died in 1983, and a fatal blow in 1998 when Carl died. The talentless Mike Love would still be pumping gas had it not been for the good fortune that his cousin was Brian Wilson. His touring band "The Beach Boys" is a disgrace to their legacy. He's a mockery of their accomplishments and totally dispensable. "Kokomo" is a foul reminder of what he has done to trash their body of work. What he has done to Brian Wilson and their reputation is unforgiveable.

Well, Kokomo, although a terrible record,
was written by Love, John Phillips, Scott McKenzie,
and Terry Melcher.
That's a lot of hit records between all of them.
which tells you somthing: You can't hit it out of the park all the time.
Sometimes you strike out looking on three pitches.
It is a terrible record and an even terrible song.

I have seen Mike Love's Beach Boys and I've also seen Brian Wilson and the Wondermints version of the Beach boys. They both have something to offer.
Remember Mike Love was the lead singer in over 50% of the original Beach Boys hits (guestimate) - his nasal vocals are as important to the original sound as Brians harmonys.
Like Paul McCartney sings 'his' Beatles songs when performing live - Mike LOve tends to sing the Beach boys songs he contributed too. His 'Beach Boys' band are not too exciting, but neither is Brians to be honest.
Brian is Brian and everybody loves Brian for his excentricity and his genius - his performance is far from flawless, he relies heavily on his back up singers. I have to say, when I saw Mike Love, his vocals were pretty much up to the mark, he played 2 sets lasting about 3 hours, sang everything and more.
Give him a chance - he's ok.

I listened to Pet Sounds last year after reading about The Beatles finding it to be so influential.

What a piece of crap album. THAT influenced The Beatles? They really were doing a lot of drugs to find that album to influence them.

Do The Beach Boys cover Brown Eyed Girl? Ya think they might since they just do the same garbage all the time. Love is an idiot. Better than nothing? Only for fools. Nothing would be excellent.

Read Nick Kent's account of The Beach Boys in his book, "The Dark Stuff". Also, a riveting account of the Stones' 1973 European tour.

Priceless - you listen to an album 42 years after it came out and condemn it as a piece of crap.
The 30 million people who bought it (including the Beatles) must've been wrong then.

I agree. Mike is like the guy at work who shows up every day, does his job, does it well, works hard, gives the customers their money's worth, and is basically a decent guy who makes up for his somewhat limited natural gifts with an impressive work ethic.

That's a great book and a cracking read, even if Nick Kent did invent the myth that Keith punched Ronnie in the face for nodding off on stage at Wembley in 1982.

I still stand by what I said here 12 years ago. In fact, there's something I'd like to add. Two days after my mother died, in December 2018, there was a Beach Boys concert at a small theater in my hometown of Ann Arbor, Michigan. Needless to say, I wasn't really feeling in the mood to do anything fun, but when a front row center ticket turned up at the last minute, I forced myself to go. Whatever else you want to say about Mike Love, his performance that night cheered me up considerably, and helped me to get through a difficult time in my life, and for that I'll always be grateful to him.

I would agree with most of what you're saying. The only thing I'd really take exception to is its worth the money, which I don't know what they charge but if its mostly over $50 then I can't imagine it is. If its $50 or lower, I'd maybe even give him $70 if thats including the fees, then sure, I can see how Mike is worth that.

Please. Mike Love is part of the Beach Boys foundation. That nasal voice is teenage life in the early 1960s that I remember. (Even though I wasn't a teenager yet). And he co-wrote some great Beach Boys hits, including California Girls and Good Vibrations.

It is unfortunate that the remaining Beach Boys don't get along. Their 50th reunion has a great DVD. And of course they sounded even better when Carl was alive. I have seen Brian Wilson with his 'Beach Boys' of Al Jardine, David Marks and Blondie Chaplin. I did not miss Mike. Those crack musicians and vocalists Brian uses sound fantastic. Mike is more for the casual crowd. People that would go to an Indian Casino in the middle of nowhere to hear the hits.

Did you guys know that an uncredited Ry Cooder plays his signature electric guitar somewhere deeper in the mix in the 2nd half of "Kokomo"?

It's not a bad song at all even though this is not the Kokomo in Indiana.
Might as well have been Cocomo. That would have been a little more authentic ;-)

Carl had the voice on the early hits.

I was lucky enough to catch them in the early 80s when all 3 Wilson Brothers were back in the band, was a night and day difference to the show I saw before that without them all (and I suspect shows after as well).

Last time I saw them they were supporting the Holland album. Great album and that was a great set, captured immediately afterward on a live album that was not bad either. I forget if Brian Wilson was in that version, I don't think so, but they largely did the material from their new album and some pretty dynamic versions of old hits. Blondie Chaplin was in the band but I forget more of the details. I think I should drag those two LPs (live one was actual a double album so three total) and give them a listen, haven't in thirty years I would guess. I just know I totally loved that Holland album, and by that point I had totally written off the BBs as anything more than a county fair attraction. I didn't know they had that quality of original material in them anymore.

I don't mind Kokomo but one song from the 80s I really liked was Getcha Back, which was a single in 85 I think. That song reminded me of 60s Beach Boys, especially with Brian's falsetto voice.
