O T Best and worst music documentaries

I am really enjoying under the influence and it made me think about my favourite music docos and least favourite. Gimme shelter could be number 1, the ginger baker doco was good recently. I thought it might get loud with jimmy page and the edge was a lost opportunity. I am sick of the Eagles but their recent doco was great.

Anthology is definitely among the best. It truly is the real story of the Beatles by those who were in the best position to tell it. Of course many (like the author of the Complete Idiot's Guide to the Beatles) say that it's merely a diplomatic celebration that softpedals so much, and that there should have been more than the Beatles, George Martin, Neil Aspinall and Derek Taylor giving interviews, but anyone else wouldn't have been as in an advantageous position with regards to witnessing events, and it's never considered that the reason the stories about the end are "softpedaled" is simply because this story has been told so many times already, and of course people lately like to elevate to the same acrimony level as Roger Waters and David Gilmour in order to make more money off of it.

Anyways, with that, it makes me wish all the more that the Stones would sit down to do their own Anthology series, as it would be very interesting and gripping, even with Mick's reluctance to talk about himself and memory lapses, and Ronnie's observations that often seem to reflect more as a storyteller rather than eyewitness.

Such a project would basically seek to improve upon both Crossfire Hurricane and 25x5, being episodic like Anthology, and everyone discussing things from both documentaries in greater detail, and of course telling about what happened since.

What are the odds that the Stones' camp will end up doing such a project?

They already did a variation of the anthology with Crossfire Hurricane.

I'd like to see them put together a lot of clips of old footage, with Stones and others close to them commenting.

The Last Waltz, Gimme Shelter and Charlie Is My Darling!

On the lighter side: This is Spinal Tap and The Rutles All You Need Is Cash.

The Kids Are Alright

The Beatles Anthology
David Bowie: Five Years - The Making Of An Icon
The Who: The Kids Are Alright
George Harrison: Living In The Material World
The Rolling Stones: Gimme Shelter

I wish The Stones had an extended release, just as the Fabs.

I hate rock documentaries where they interview the caterer on Magical Mystery Tour and a critic and the like and no principals and obviously got no clearance on any of the band's music or video clips, so all you get are incidental music and still photos you've already seen a ton. And that's all you get.

What are the chances that 25×5 will ever be released on DVD?

Just saw some of Marley on palladium this afternoon. I think it's one of the better music docs. But, I'd have to list Gimme Shelter at the top. Still absolutely riveting, so matter how many times you've see it.

Is there a CSNY documentary? I'd love to learn more about the early days of those guys. Also, does anyone know where I can find Echo in the Canyon - I can't find it on Netflix nor YT.

Thank you, good people!

Off the top of my head, some of the best:

The Beatles - Anthology
The Who - The Kids are Alright - might be nice to see an updat6ed version from '79 forward...or maybe not haha.
Bob Dylan - Don't Look Back
(A film about) Jim Hendrix
The Clash: Westway to the World
Woodstock
Monterey Pop
Gimme Shelter
Roots, Rock, Reggae (Inside the Jamaican Music Scene)
The Decline of Western Civilization (pt. 1)
And can't forgot Spinal Tap smiling smiley

Hairball check into Deep Roots Music chpt 1 - 6 for some even better reggae footage. It was a Ch 4 UK tv presentation back in the early 80s that in the last few years got resurrected and published on DVD, 3 DVDs actually. I had a hand in making that happen. It had long been lost in the CH4 archives and I nagged a friend of mine who worked there into finding it. Didn't take much nagging actually, he was on it big time after I sent him a VHS copy I had of the original broadcasts.

As for best documentaries, I go along with pretty much everyone else, Gimme Shelter at or near the top. I would add in Go Ride the Music (might not be the title unfortunately) about the Jefferson Airplane and their early days. And The Great Rock and Roll Swindle too, from what I remember of it.

There are a lot of good ones about the Stones or Keith Richards, mainly because they are about the Stones. I have seen a few other good ones on the yearly Barcelona In-Edit festival. There was a very good one about Lemmy: "Lemmy: 49% motherf**ker. 51% son of a b****." a few years ago that was fantastic.

A really very very very bad one, however, was one about Keith Richards: "Keith Richards: The Origin of the Species" by Julien Temple. That was just pathethic and the blame lies mainly on Julien Temple in his choice of hectic editing, in his attempt to find meaning were there is noone ("rock n roll was caused by the nazis" or something idiotic like that) and his ridiculous way of filming (e.g. every time Keith is in the picture, he is in black and white and blowing out smoke in slow motion because "that's how cool he is").
